In his first season with Kansas City, the Chiefs were one of four NFL teams that allowed a league-low two rushing TDs at home in 2010. Zimmer helped Kansas City allow 46.2 fewer rushing yards per game in 2010 compared to a year earlier.
In 2011, with Zimmer’s assistance, LB Tamba Hali registered 12.0 sacks and LB Derrick Johnson set a Chiefs record for most tackles in a single season with 179 tackles. Hali and Johnson combined to become the first pair of linebackers in team history selected to the Pro Bowl in the same season since Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier following the 1972 season.
Prior to his arrival in Kansas City, Zimmer spent four seasons with New Orleans (2006-09) where he was responisble for opponent breakdowns, self-scouting, creating and editing the playbook, as well as working with the Saints linebackers. It was there that he continued his relationship with Gibbs, who served as the team’s defensive coordinator. Zimmer was a member of the New Orleans staff that posted a 31-17 victory vs. Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLIV.
In 2009, the New Orleans defensive unit ranked second in the NFL by recording 39 takeaways. The Saints’ 26 interceptions finished third in the league and tied for the third-highest seasonal total in team history. New Orleans scored 141 points off of takeaways, tying Green Bay for the highest point total in the NFL.
Zimmer grew up in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, area when his father, Mike, served on a Cowboys staff that included Gibbs. The elder Zimmer currently serves as the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Zimmer was a four-year letterman as a defensive back at Trinity (Texas) University.
