Chiefs value NFL Combine interview opportunities

Posted Feb 22, 2012

The Chiefs will conduct one-on-one interviews with 60 NFL prospects over the next six days

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The NFL Scouting Combine certainly isn’t the best measure of future NFL success, but it’s a chunk of the overall evaluation process anyway. For most teams, the one-on-one time with prospects proves more valuable than testing physical measurements.

Regardless, it’s the measurables that will generate headlines over the next week in Indianapolis.

“There are so many aspects to evaluating players when they come out and it’s all great on tape,” Chiefs Assistant GM Joel Collier explained in last year’s Inside The Combine Series on KCChiefs.com. “But you put them in the seat and you say, ‘talk to us a little bit about what motivates you,’ or ‘let’s talk about how you reacted to being benched.’

“As a coach, one of the things you want to know is if he can take the criticism. Or, instinctively, can he communicate on his feet in a decent matter. That’s not everything, but it’s another part of the equation to the whole thing.”

GM Scott Pioli and Head Coach Romeo Crennel were among the Chiefs staffers who arrived in Indianapolis on Wednesday. The entire slate of coaches, scouts and evaluators will arrive in Indianapolis sometime before the end of day Thursday.

Throw in medial staffers along with other front office personnel and the Chiefs contingency at the Combine tops 50 people.

Everyone will pay attention to the physical testing, but the 60 players who the Chiefs bring in for one-on-one interviews will offer information that’s both new and truly unique.

“After so many years, you hope that you can figure out if the player is going to be smart enough or tough enough,” Collier said. “That’s a big part of the (interview) room. The tape is something you can watch anywhere.”

The first wave of NFL hopefuls arrived in Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon.
