KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the latest recipients of the Missouri and Kansas High School Coach of the Week award. Rockhurst’s Tony Severino (Missouri) and Mill Valley’s Joel Applebee (Kansas) each received this honor after a strong performance by their respective teams last week.
As a result, both schools will receive a $500 grant towards player health and safety equipment and/or education. Additionally, Severino and Applebee will be presented with a congratulatory football autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Romeo Crennel and a certificate recognizing their selection in addition to a special edition Chiefs Coach of the Week hat. Each coach is now a finalist for their respective state’s Chiefs High School Coach of the Year Award, which will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season.
Severino receives the award following a 16-6 victory over a Jefferson City squad that is recognized as one of the top programs in the state. The win marked the fifth consecutive victory for the Hawklets. Thanks to Severino’s discipline and coaching ability, Rockhurst now stands at 6-2 and has soared to No. 3 in the latest Metro Sports Super 25 Poll. This week, Severino guides the Hawklets to an important district clash against undefeated Columbia Hickman. In his 36 years as a head coach, Severino has amassed 328 victories, 285 of which have been collected in 30 years at the helm of Rockhurst. He is the only coach to win a state title in both Missouri and Kansas, accomplishing the feat once at Shawnee Mission Northwest and seven times at Rockhurst.
Applebee earned the award after a convincing 43-0 victory against Schlagle. This marks the sixth-consecutive victory for Coach Applebee and the Jaguars. Even more impressive is the way the team has won those six contests, with both the team’s offensive and defensive units clicking on all cylinders. Mill Valley has outscored their opponents by a cumulative score of 310-43 in those games. However, Applebee has kept his team level-headed throughout the season, and has insisted his team focus only on the next game, not those in the past. Mill Valley’s winning streak has placed them at No. 12 in the latest Metro Sports Super 25 Poll. This week, they host a Washington team that has dropped its previous two contests.
The 2012 High School Coach of the Week program is a joint initiative of the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. The program is designed to recognize and reward Kansas City area high school coaches who have created successful programs for teams and players both on and off of the playing field. This includes coaches that champion philosophies which advance and promote player health and safety.
Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame linebacker and current Director of Special Events Gary Spani will be on hand for a special presentation to honor the recipients at their respective schools.
Each state’s winner is selected in collaboration with Time Warner Cable’s Metro Sports. Time Warner Cable is the official video provider of the Chiefs.
