TMC Wellness Tour at the Boys and Girls Club

Posted Mar 30, 2013

‏Although it’s the offseason, the Chiefs Community Caring Team is continuing their efforts to teach children in the Kansas City area the importance of exercise and nutrition. This week, the Chiefs visited the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kansas City for the Truman Medical Centers (TMC) Wellness Tour.

The Wellness Tour focused on educating those in attendance of healthier lifestyle choices.  Four different stations were set up in the Boys and Girls Club’s gymnasium for the students to learn about the importance of eating healthy, ways to manage stress, different exercise techniques and a “Let’s Move” zone which taught the students different dances and songs.

“The Chiefs Community Caring team joined together with Truman Medical Centers for our Wellness Tour series,” Chuck Castellano, Chiefs Community Relations Manager noted. “The whole idea was to share with these kids the importance of not only staying active and being fit but eating healthy as well. These Wellness Tours really reinforce the idea that it’s important to be cognizant of what you eat.”

Along with some of the Chiefs Cheerleaders and KC Wolf, Chiefs Center Rodney Hudson was also in attendance, participating in the different stations and teaching the students about the importance of exercise and nutrition.

“I think a lot of people may be surprised to know that there was a Chiefs offensive lineman that was focused on what your intake is, making sure that it’s healthy, but that’s what Rodney did today,” Castellano explained. “He was at the food station making a healthy snack mix for everyone…and making sure that as they came through he talked to them about why it’s smart to think about what you’re eating and to make sure you are eating things that are healthy for you.”

Hudson offered the students insight into how proper exercise and nutrition can play a key role in their daily lives.

“We’re out here to let the kids know how important it is to eat healthy, stay active and take care of yourself,” Hudson commented. “It’s important to work with these kids, they’re the next generation. It’s important to let them know that they need to stay healthy and active.”

The Wellness Tour series is a result of the Chiefs and TMC’s “Partners for a Healthy Community” outreach program. The Chiefs and TMC have been teamed up since 2010 with the goal of sharing the common message of living a healthy lifestyle.

“We have a great partnership with the Chiefs,” Leo Prieto, TMC Community Health Education Management said. “We do Wellness Tours throughout the year where we engage the youth of the community. It’s critical to educate these kids while their young and while their growing up. The ultimate goal of the Wellness Tours is to educate our youth on the importance of eating right, exercising, setting goals and doing well in school.”

The Chiefs will again partner with TMC for the Touchdown Family Fest in June at Arrowhead Stadium. The event will feature fee vision and dental screenings with appearances from Chiefs players, ambassadors, cheerleaders and KC Wolf. More information about the event will be released at a later date.
