NFL Draft Spotlight - Day 21: Jarvis Jones

Posted Apr 13, 2013

We spotlight the former Georgia LB, who led the nation with 14.5 sacks

The 2013 NFL Draft Spotlight series continues, as we preview one pro prospect per day, right up until the start of the draft, April 25-27. However, none of the reports in this series are indicative of who the Kansas City Chiefs plan to draft, with any of their currently-owned eight picks.

Day 21 of 32

Jarvis Jones was an early favorite, picked by many, to be one of the first names called by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, later this month. However, Jones' rise to the national spotlight wasn't without struggles.

Playing for the USC Trojans and facing the Oregon Ducks on Halloween in 2009, Jarvis was injured during a "routine hit" and found himself hospitalized days later, according to ESPN The Magazine's Jordan Conn.

A specialist told Jones that he had a "mild" case of spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column. Despite later being cleared by doctors to play football, USC team doctors refused to clear him for contact. He later transferred to Georgia and began dominating in the SEC in 2011.

His success continued in 2012, where he set the school's single-season record for sacks (14.5) and tackles for loss (24.5).

Jones decided not to work out for NFL scouts, general managers and coaches at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine and instead, he performed at Georgia's Pro Day.

Pro Day stats:

40-Yard Dash (4.92 sec)

225-lb Bench Press (20 reps)

What else should you know about Jarvis' 2012 stats?

* Led the SEC with 7 forced fumbles (school record)

* Named to Walter Camp All-America Team

* Associated Press All-America Team

STRENGTHS:

(Jarvis) "Has better than average instincts as a pass rusher. Shows natural instincts when it comes to keeping off of blocks and sifting through traffic," according to ESPN's NFL DraftTracker.

"Seems to find the football a quarter-count quicker than most defenders. Keeps head on swivel even when using hands to keep blockers off of body."

QUESTIONS:

"I just see him as a one-position player," NFL Network's Gil Brandt said of Jones.

"I don't think he can play in space. I don't think he can be a 3-4 'backer that can drop into space and be effective," Brandt continued.

"When you see him come from one side and try to chase down a play, he doesn't have that speed that you really need to have to play that position when he's chasing a guy."

Health history and Pro Day results may cause Jones' draft stock to fall, later this month, according Bleacher Report's Dan Hope.
