Matt Cassel Postgame Quotes - 10/31

Posted Oct 31, 2011

On the game: “It was a great victory for us. What an unbelievable environment. Arrowhead was rocking tonight. The fans were unbelievable. I am proud of how our guys responded. We faced some adversity. That’s the great part about football. You never know what can happen. With the turnover late in the game we got another opportunity and took advantage of it. It was, across the board, a great team effort. All in all, I am excited we got another win under our belt.”

How would you grade the team’s performance: “There were times we failed to execute like we wanted to, but at the same time, it is all about the W and that is the most important statistic at the end of the day. It’s another win for us. Sometimes that’s how football goes. There are some good plays and some bad games. You hit some lulls and our guys were able overcome those issues and at the end of the day come out with a victory.”

Has it sunk in that you are now in a tie for first place? “I don’t think so. I think the great part about this team is that we continue to keep our head and continue to work. Our mentality is you just try to get one win and then two wins and three wins. Now we are on a four game win streak. Everybody is excited about that but we know there is a lot of season left to be played. We’re happy about where we are at right now in the year.”

How has WR Jonathan Baldwin changed the offense? “I think Jonathan came in and did a great job today. He made some big, big catches. The post route obviously, early in the game in the first quarter, was outstanding. It was a great play by him. I think he is a guy that continues to improve week in and week out. This was a big week for him, having a few catches here and there and being able to contribute.”

With the playmakers at receiver, would you be open to throwing the ball more? “I am going to go out and execute what ever they call. The coaching staff always does what they think is best for the team.”

Is if fair to say your performance is up and down throughout the game? “I don’t think that is a fair assessment at all. I think sometimes there is ebb and flow in any game. I think offensively it takes eleven guys doing their job at all times. Sometimes it doesn’t work out the way you want, but at the same time you have to continue to move forward and be consistent.”

Do you have any sympathy for Philip Rivers when he lost the snap? “I think Philip Rivers is an outstanding quarterback. He has proven that year-in and year-out in this league. He is a heck of a competitor. Tonight he threw for over 300 yards and did all the things you can do, but sometimes in football it comes down to one play and, fortunately for us, it worked out in our favor.”

A month ago did you think you would be in a tie for first place right now? “That was the farthest thing from my mind a month ago. That is the last thing any of us were thinking. We were just trying to get a win under our belt. I think we are all just excited to be where we are right now. We know there is a lot of improvement to be made and a lot of room to continue to grow.”

Comment on this offense’s potential: “There is no doubt we still have a lot of room to grow. That is the great part about this team and where we are going. We are going in the right direction and we are still growing.”
