Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali is recognized on game days for his continuous motor and relentless approach to sack the opposing quarterback. That’s just one reason why he was an obvious choice to head back to school for a special announcement. During a recent visit by the six-year NFL veteran, Hali helped name Spring Hill Elementary School as the Chiefs PLAY 60 Super School. As a result, the school was awarded a $10,000 PLAY 60 grant for health and wellness programming or equipment. Following the presentation, Hali sprinted to the gym and joined Spring Hill students in an Ultimate NFL Physical Education Class, which included a series of PLAY 60 activity stations.

“I love it any time I can spend time impacting kids,” said Hali wearing a board smile. “We just had so much fun today running around in the gym and getting exercise. They obviously didn’t need me to tell them that staying fit can be fun. You could tell that staying active is something they have already embraced.”

To celebrate the start of the 2011 Chiefs season, fans were encouraged to demonstrate their passion for the Red and Gold by planning a unique Back to Football Friday event for their school, all to support youth health and wellness. Schools that entered the Back to Football Friday contest submitted photos of their event and answered brief essay questions. By participating, each local school was in the running to be chosen as the Chiefs PLAY 60 Super School.

Still, this is far from the only in-school program the Chiefs utilize to spread the PLAY 60 message. Weekly, the team recognizes a Chiefs Red Friday Spirit School. Now in its second year, this initiative acknowledges local schools from throughout the region that showcase their Chiefs spirit and the PLAY 60 ideals on Fridays during the NFL season. Schools that send pictures and narratives of their Chiefs Red Friday Spirit School activities have the chance to win a Chiefs Community Caring Team school assembly that is themed around PLAY 60.

This is another example of the Kansas City Chiefs commitment to playing an active role in our community. The Hunt Family has made corporate citizenship and charitable giving a priority for the Chiefs. Those efforts focus on organizations and programs which improve the civic and cultural climate in our region, support families and children in crisis, improve health and wellness among children as well as preserve the legacy and history of the game of football. One way the organization supports these efforts is through Chiefs Community Caring Team visits.
