Fifth-round pick OLB Cameron Sheffield is officially under contract

The Chiefs made it official with 2010 fifth-round draft pick Cameron Sheffield on Tuesday morning. A collegiate defensive end at Troy, Sheffield was drafted as an outside linebacker at the pro level. Sheffield worked behind 2009’s starting cast of outside linebackers, Tamba Hali and Mike Vrabel, during off-season work. He is also expected to compete for duties on special teams when training camp opens next week.

Reports surfaced as early as last Friday that a deal with Sheffield had been reached, but Kansas City’s front office did not confirm those developments.

Sheffield is the second member of the Chiefs 2010 draft class to sign his rookie contract. Fellow fifth-round draftee S Kendrick Lewis was the first to sign on June 29th. The signings leave Kansas City with five players drafted in the first three rounds unsigned.

5th overall – S Eric Berry

36th overall – WR Dexter McCluster

50th overall – CB Javier Arenas

68th overall – OL Jon Asamoah

93rd overall – TE Tony Moeaki

Thus far, only one of the first 64 players selected this past April is under contract (second-round pick T Vladimir Ducasse – 61st overall, New York Jets). Today’s date, July 20th, marks one of the latest dates in recent NFL memory (if not NFL history) in which no first-round picks were under contract.
