When the Chiefs waived six players earlier this week, the number wasn’t just a total picked out of the blue. Cutting six players was a calculated move as we approach the busy season for signing draft picks to contracts.
It’s no coincidence that by cutting six players the Chiefs found their way down to a total count of 73 players under contract. With all seven draft picks remaining unsigned and a roster limit capped with a ceiling of 80 players under contract…well, you can figure it out.
That’s correct; it’s time to start anticipating the signings of Kansas City’s draft class. For some, news of a signing could be close to breaking any day now. Officially joining the Chiefs may be a bit further away for others.
Currently, the Chiefs are one of 14 teams yet to ink one of their picks.

June 18th – K
June 26th – TE Jake O’Connell (7th round, 237th overall)
June 30th – OL
July 23rd – RB
July 30th – WR
July 30th – DL
July 30th – CB
*August 7th – DE
*signing occurred after the start of training camp

Obviously, any additional signings and/or releases between now and the start of training camp can alter the Chiefs situation.
