Scott Pioli and Todd Haley obviously came into this weekend feeling that the Chiefs secondary needed a facelift. With the acquisition of Ole Miss DB Kendrick Lewis in the fifth round, the Chiefs spent roughly 43% of their 2010 draft picks on players in the defensive backfield (barring any more trades throughout the remainder of the draft).

The Chiefs now roster a total of 15 defensive backs, with 10 of those players seeing duty on the field a year ago. If Kansas City’s front office wanted to send a message to the position group this off-season, they’ve done so by creating an open competition for roster spots worth watching this spring and summer.

When competition heats up, final positions typically boil down to a “the more you can do” philosophy. With draft picks Eric Berry, Javier Arenas and Kendrick Lewis all possessing versatility, a number of veteran Chiefs also fit that line of thinking. Players like Jon McGraw, Maurice Leggett, Donald Washington, Travis Daniels and even Brandon Carr also represent current players who can play more than one position in the secondary. An argument can be made to add more names to that list as well.

Exactly how the Chiefs line up in the secondary when OTAs open up will be something to watch. Right now it’s hard to even figure out which players will be competing with one another in a very crowded position group. As a whole, however, the competition should be fierce and it’s far too early to count anyone out.

The newest member of the Chiefs secondary, Kendrick Lewis, possesses a stat line that shows the ability to hit, cover and play special teams. He led the Rebels in tackles each of the last two years, finished first in forced fumbles last season, led the team in INTs, finished second is pass breakup and chipped in with two blocked kicks.
