Former Chiefs running backs Allen and Holmes to square off in Lake Tahoe

Marcus Allen and Priest Holmes set to play in 23rd annual American Century Celebrity Golf Classic

Marcus Allen is one of the best running backs in NFL history.

Priest Holmes is the Chiefs all-time leading rusher.

But who is the better golfer?

The two former Chiefs running backs are part of the field for the 23rd annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament held this week in Lake Tahoe. Allen is a veteran of the event while Holmes is a first-time entrant.

The Chiefs have had a long list of representation at the charity tournament throughout the years. Some of the performances have been impressive. Others not so much. Regardless, it’s a fun event each summer before the start of NFL training camps that also raises money and awareness for a good cause.

For the 7th year in a row, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) is the official charity of the American Century Championship. The tournament will help build awareness of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign, while raising funds for the LAF’s cancer survivorship initiatives.

With a purse of $600,000, the 54-hole tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course will air on NBC Sports Network beginning Friday, July 20th from 3-6 pm (CST). NBC will pick up the broadcast on Saturday and Sunday from 2-5 pm (CST).

Joining Allen and Holmes in the event are a number of other NFL personalities and celebrities including former Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, former Chiefs and current Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and former Chiefs quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver.

Yes, Billy Joe Tolliver played for the Chiefs. It was for a whopping three games during the 1997 season (he completed his only pass attempt for -8 yards) and it’s a good thing too considering Tolliver has claimed three American Century titles. As you’ll see in the results below, Tolliver’s participation is desperately needed to bring up the overall performance of current and former Chiefs at the event.

As to whom the better golfer is between Allen and Holmes? I’d go with Allen, but Holmes has built a local golf following in Kansas City with his annual tournament benefitting the Priest Holmes Foundation. Visit http://www.priestholmesfoundation.org for the latest on Holmes’ community efforts in Kansas City and his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.

Here’s how current and former Chiefs have fared in Lake Tahoe over the past five tournaments (2007-11):
