The Kansas City Chiefs host the division rival Oakland Raiders for a 3:05 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, Oct. 28 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs are currently 1-5 while the Raiders enter the game at 2-4.
QB Brady Quinn will start under center for the Chiefs after being named the starter by Head Coach Romeo Crennel on Monday. Quinn started in the last game at Tampa Bay on Oct. 14 and completed 22 of 38 passes for 180 yards with two interceptions. Sunday’s contest will mark his 14th career start and first in consecutive games since Dec. 20, 2009.
Offensively, Kansas City is led by RB Jamaal Charles, who leads the league in rushing yards (98.5) and scrimmage yards (119.3) per game. He is averaging 5.1 yards per carry and 7.8 yards per reception out of the backfield.
WR Dwayne Bowe leads the receivers with 34 catches for 427 yards (12.6 avg.) and three TDs. WR Dexter McCluster has added 21 receptions for 187 yards (8.9 avg.).
Defensively, LB Derrick Johnson has recorded a team-high 50 tackles (41 solo), including 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack (-10.0 yards) and three QB pressures. S Eric Berry has posted 29 tackles (22 solo), with 3.0 tackles for loss and one pass defensed.
LB Justin Houston has a team-high 6.0 sacks (-45.0 yards), which is tied for the fourth-highest total in the AFC. He also leads the team with nine QB pressures. On the first drive of the last game at Tampa Bay, Houston recorded his first career interception and returned it 32 yards. Fellow LB Tamba Hali has 4.0 sacks (-29.0 yards) and five QB pressures.
On special teams, K Ryan Succop has converted 10 straight field goal attempts and P Dustin Colquitt ranks fourth in the league with 16 punts placed inside the 20-yard line. At Tampa Bay, RB Shaun Draughn blocked a punt that was eventually recovered by LB Edgar Jones and returned 11 yards for a touchdown.
Oakland is 2-4 and coming off of a 26-23 overtime victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. QB Carson Palmer has completed 148 of 241 passes for 1,732 yards with seven TDs and four INTs. RB Darren McFadden has rushed 103 times for 324 yards (3.1 avg.) with two TDs. TE Brandon Myers leads all Raiders receivers with 28 receptions for 332 yards (11.9 avg.).
On defense, LB Phillip Wheeler leads the team with 48 tackles (34 solo) to go along with two forced fumbles and four passes defensed. Three Oakland defenders are tied for the team-lead with one interception.
CHIEFS-RAIDERS SERIES HISTORY
Sunday’s contest marks the 107th meeting between the Chiefs and Raiders, which is the most Kansas City has faced any single opponent. The Chiefs own a 55-49-2 (.528) overall record against Oakland, including a 53-48-2 mark in the regular season.
The Raiders have won five consecutive times at Arrowhead Stadium and six of the last 10 matchups overall. Prior to then, Kansas City swept the season series for four straight years (2003-06) and won nine matchups in a row from 2003-07.
Last season, the teams split the series with both squads winning on the road. On Oct. 23, 2011, the Chiefs registered a 28-0 shutout in Oakland behind a team-record six interceptions, including two returned for TDs by CB Brandon Flowers and S Kendrick Lewis. CB Javier Arenas added his first career touchdown on a seven-yard run out of the Wildcat formation in that contest.
On Dec. 24, 2011 at Arrowhead, Oakland won a 16-13 overtime contest on a 36-yard field goal by K Sebastian Janikowski in the extra period. Raiders QB Carson Palmer completed a 53-yard pass to WR Darrius Heyward-Bey on the fi rst offensive play of overtime. Oakland DT Richard Seymour blocked two Chiefs field goal attempts that afternoon.
