Chiefs add rookie free agent QB Alex Tanney

Posted Jun 5, 2012

Tanney set an NCAA Division III record with 14,249 career passing yards and an NCAA record with 157 career touchdowns

The Chiefs roster now sits at its full allotment of 90 players with the signing of free agent quarterback Alex Tanney.

Tanney, 24, signed with Kansas City shortly before Tuesday’s OTA practice. He became a YouTube sensation in 2011 thanks to his uncanny accuracy as a “trick shot quarterback” (watch the video that went viral). His throws have also featured on the History Channel's "Stan Lee's Superhumans."

An undrafted rookie from Monmouth College (Illinois), Tanney recently took part in Buffalo’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. He joins Matt Cassel, Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi in the Chiefs quarterback ranks.

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli indicated in April that he preferred to carry four quarterbacks into training camp. Kansas City previously worked out rookie quarterback David LeGree during the team’s three-day rookie minicamp May 11th-13th. LeGree has since signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

Tanney (6-4, 220), played in 47 games at Monmouth completing 1,205 of 1,756 pass attempts (68.6 pct.). He set an NCAA Division III record, throwing for 14,249 yards and an NCAA record with 157 touchdowns. Tanney threw just 30 interceptions during his career at Monmouth.

The Normal, Ill., native was a two-time Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. Tanney was a two-time first-team Illinois All-State quarterback at Lexington High School in Lexington, Ill.

Tanney will join the Chiefs for Tuesday’s OTA practice.
