Chiefs QBs In Spotlight

Posted Dec 8, 2010

Matt Cassel undergoes appendectomy surgery

A quarterback quake occurred at Arrowhead with the somewhat surprising promotion of practice squad QB Tyler Palko on Wednesday morning, followed by Matt Cassel’s even more surprising absence from practice later in the afternoon.

Head Coach Todd Haley said that the Chiefs originally decided to promote Palko from the practice squad on Tuesday night during a weekly staff meeting. By Wednesday morning, Brodie Croyle was taking first-team practice reps while Palko served as the team's second quarterback.

Cassel was feeling the effects of an emergency appendectomy surgery.

The Chiefs placed no timetable on Cassel’s return to the field, only saying that the team expected him to return to work this week. Cassel appeared in good health on Tuesday, appearing at two local community events; the high school football Simone Awards and a trip to the Ronald McDonald House.

Kansas City had previously carried just two quarterbacks throughout the first 13 weeks of the season and no QB outside of Cassel has taken a game snap this season for the Chiefs.

“Philosophically, we need our guys to practice,” Haley said. “They need to practice to play and that’s our policy. How much practice they need to have to play is determined by me ultimately in deciding whether or not our guys are ready to go.”

Cassel’s weekly press conference was cancelled.

Chiefs Injury Report

Outside of Cassel, two other players were listed on the Chiefs injury report: Donald Washington and Kendrick Lewis.

Washington rode the stationary bikes and did not participate in practice with an ankle injury. Lewis is also nursing an ankle injury that kept him out of last Sunday’s win over Denver. Lewis remained limited on Wednesday.
