The NFL has awarded 23 teams compensatory draft choices in the 2011 NFL Draft. Kansas City is one of those clubs.
The Chiefs will pick up an additional sixth-round pick this April, selecting at 199th overall (the 34th pick in the sixth round).
The Chiefs were awarded the additional pick after losing versatile offensive lineman Wade Smith to Houston as an unrestricted free agent last off-season. Smith started all 16 games for the Texans in 2010.
Compensatory picks, sandwiched within the third through seventh rounds, are determined by a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires the previous year.
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by the formula.
Since compensatory selections came into existence in 1994, the Chiefs have received 13 additional picks. The last time that the Chiefs were awarded a compensatory pick, ![]()

Maybe pick #199 carries a little mojo for Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli? New England drafted All-Pro QB Tom Brady with the 199th pick via a compensatory selection in 2000. Pioli was New England's Assistant Director of Player Personnel at the time.
