Chiefs Draft DB Sanders Commings in 5th Round

Posted Apr 27, 2013

The Kansas City Chiefs have selected Georgia DB Sanders Commings in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

With the 134th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Georgia DB Sanders Commings from the University of Georgia.

The former MLB draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008, Commings played three games in that same season for Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt, before redshirting.

In 2009, playing in 13 games, Commings intercepted a pass and recorded three of his 12-total tackles on the season during the Independence Bowl against Texas A&M.

As a sophomore in 2010, Commings earned the Most Improved Player Awards for special teams, playing in 12 games, including nine starts. He totaled 36 tackles and three interceptions.

In 2011, Commings started all 14 games, making 55 tackles, recording one fumble and a fumble recovery, as well as one interception and 12 pass breakups.

During the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine, Commings showcased his speed and agility. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds, recorded a 34.5-inch vertical jump and completed the 20-yard shuttle in 4.30 seconds.

Commings said the Chiefs met with him on a few previous occasions, prior to the draft.

“I talked to them at the Combine, at the Senior Bowl a little bit," Sanders Commings said. "I also had a private workout with them. I’m very excited to be a part of the program.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid says his staff will utilize the versatility that Commings brings to the team.

"What you see with Sanders is a big, physical press corner (and) safety, he’s done both at Georgia last year and this year – he had two games this year where he played the safety spot," coach Reid said.

"He fits in to what we do in both spots, he’s a 4.4 40-yard dash guy, so he has size and speed at 216 pounds in that area that can move. He can help us in a couple of different spots, both at the corner and the safety spot.”

When he arrives in KC, Commings will be reunited with former Bulldogs teammate, current Chiefs LB Justin Houston, who played for the Bulldogs during the 2008-2010 seasons.
