Chiefs Community Caring Team Lends a Hand to Japan in Disaster Aftermath

Posted Apr 1, 2011

The Kansas City Chiefs Community Caring Team, including staff and Red Coaters, recently volunteered at Heart to Heart International. Together, they assembled personal hygiene kits bound for Japan. Upon arrival, these vital supplies will then be distributed to those in need following the aftermath of a trio of disasters, triggered on March 11th. A tsunami spawned by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake has created a nuclear crisis, devastating this island nation.

“The Chiefs have always been a great partner of ours and a fantastic leader in the community,” noted Heart of Heart International’s Donor Relations Specialist Jason Slattery. “The kits that the Chiefs volunteers are helping to assemble and quality check today will make such a difference in the lives of those trying to pick up the pieces. There is so much need, not only internationally but even here locally. It is thanks to donations and volunteers like this that Heart to Heart is able to make the impact we have for nearly two decades.”

The Chiefs Community Caring Team has often teamed with Heart to Heart International on disaster outreach initiatives. Just last year, the Chiefs had a similar volunteer session to assemble hygiene kits bound for Haitians dealing with their own earthquake crisis. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Chiefs raised $185,000 for Heart to Heart’s relief efforts, then helped to pack a truck bound for the Gulf Coast with the supplies those monies financed.

Led by Clark and Tavia Hunt along with the entire Hunt Family, the Chiefs Community Caring Team includes members from throughout the organization who participate in community outreach efforts year-round. It consists of such Red and Gold institutions as the Chiefs Women’s Organization, KC Wolf, Chiefs Cheerleaders, Chiefs Ambassadors, alumni, Chiefs Red Coaters and other Chiefs staff members.

Heart to Heart International is improving global health through humanitarian initiatives that connect people and resources to a world in need. Since its founding in 1992, Heart to Heart has delivered aid worth nearly $800 million in U.S. wholesale value to more than 100 countries, including the United States. The organization was named to Forbes magazine’s prestigious list of “America’s 200 Largest Charities” in 2009 and was recognized as one of the top nonprofits in the categories of efficiency and wise use of donor resources.
