Thanks to the citizens of Jackson County, Missouri, who approved the measure that helped finance this $375-million renovation of Arrowhead, Kansas City boasts a state-of-the-art facility that not only serves as “The Home of the Chiefs,” but is also a premier sports and entertainment venue. Hunt and his family have committed $125 million to this project. The New Arrowhead will officially be dedicated prior to the Chiefs preseason contest vs. Philadelphia on August 27th. The grand opening of the New Arrowhead will take place when the Chiefs host Monday Night Football on September 13th.
“Our vision for the New Arrowhead was ‘new body, same soul’,” Hunt said. “We wanted to give our fans all of the amenities of a brand-new, first-class venue while preserving the iconic elements of the stadium. I am delighted to say that we exceeded my loftiest expectations, and we are extremely proud to show our fans the results beginning this Sunday.”
“The New Arrowhead is the byproduct of a special partnership between Jackson County and the Chiefs. I want to thank Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, the Jackson County Legislature and the Sports Authority for their leadership and steady oversight of the project.”
Sanders recognized the contributions of the many individuals who helped make this project a reality. “I'd like to congratulate Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs organization on a job well done,” Sanders said. “Their dedication and vision has helped transform Arrowhead Stadium into a world-class facility. I'd also like to thank Jackson County taxpayers who helped make this happen. They can look forward to an enhanced game-day experience that was already second to none.”
Sunday’s soccer match will serve as the culmination of a six-year planning and construction project that resulted in a 39 percent increase in the footprint of the New Arrowhead, giving the facility an official square footage of 1,640,619. The technological improvements at the New Arrowhead are among the facility’s most striking upgrades as the stadium has made the transition to high definition. It would take 2,149 32-inch televisions to equal the size of the two ArrowVision HD video boards that measure 37 x 150 feel and 42 x 100 feet, respectively.
The New Arrowhead boasts significant upgrades on every level. The new Horizon Level offers fans in the Upper Level a new vantage point, in addition to providing additional bars, restroom and concession facilities. Founder’s Plaza will be officially dedicated on July 30th, and will serve as a tribute to Lamar Hunt. Located on the stadium’s north side, the open-air plaza documents Hunt’s legacy as a founding father of the Chiefs and the American Football League.
The 28,000-square-foot Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Honor presented by Time Warner Cable is located on the Lower Level concourse of the stadium, and will celebrate its grand opening on August 25th. This dramatic area allows fans to recall the rich history of the franchise, and will be open to fans on game day. The Chiefs Sports Lab is slated for its grand opening on August 30th. This first-of-its-kind, in-stadium destination is devoted to teaching children the importance of sound nutrition and physical fitness, providing students with the tools to build a foundation for healthy life choices. Adjacent to the Chiefs Sports Lab is a new 5,000-square-foot Team Store that will be open on a year-round basis.
