Chiefs Agree to Terms with TE Kevin Boss

Posted Mar 15, 2012

Boss spent 2011 in Oakland after beginning his career with the N.Y. Giants

Kevin Boss’ first free agent visit occurred Thursday afternoon in Kansas City. He didn’t leave Arrowhead without a contract.

The Chiefs agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the veteran tight end Thursday night, bolstering one of the club’s most inconsistent positions from a season ago.

Boss notched 28 catches for 368 yards (13.1 avg.) with three TDs in 11 starts with Oakland last season.

The 28-year old has played five NFL seasons with the Giants and Raiders since being selected out of Western Oregon in the fifth-round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Boss has seen action in 72 career games and caught 147 passes for 1,968 yards (13.4 avg.) with 21 TDs.

Kansas City’s tight ends produced just 34 receptions last season after the team lost Tony Moeaki to a season-ending left knee injury in the preseason finale. The position group was also penalized 17 times for 124 yards.

Boss’ addition gives the Chiefs a second receiving threat at the position alongside Moeaki. He also carries the reputation as a solid run blocker.

Boss joins Moeaki, who’s rehabilitation currently has him on pace to make a full return by training camp, Jake O’Connell and Steve Maneri as the Chiefs’ tight ends under contract for 2012.

Unexpectedly released by the Raiders Tuesday morning, Boss was part of Oakland’s ongoing effort to work under the salary cap before the start of free agency. Releasing Boss after just one season left the Raiders vulnerable at tight end, but saved around $2.5 million in cap space.

Boss originally signed a four-year, $16 million deal with Oakland as an unrestricted free agent last August. He’s the Raiders’ second cap casualty to land in Kansas City this off-season.

In February, the Chiefs signed former Raiders CB Stanford Routt shortly after his release.
