THE MATCH-UP

Kansas City is proudly celebrating the 50th anniversary of both the Chiefs franchise and the American Football League in 2009. Appropriately, the Chiefs and Raiders will both don vintage gear for the 102nd renewal of this AFL feud.

The Chiefs enter Sunday’s game after a narrow 24-21 loss at Jacksonville (11/8). Kansas City waged a furious fourth-quarter comeback, scoring 15 points in the final 2:31 at Jacksonville. QB Matt Cassel connected with newly-acquired WR Chris Chambers for a pair of TDs. The Chiefs have scored 67 points in the final quarter of games this season, but own a combined 59 points in the fi rst three quarters. The Raiders enjoyed a bye last week after suffering a 24-16 setback in their most recent contest at San Diego (11/1).

The Chiefs have won their last six trips to Oakland and are seeking to become the fi rst team in NFL history to win seven consecutive road games against the Raiders. San Diego also owns an active streak of six straight wins at Oakland. Kansas City owns a 10-4 (.692) regular season record at Oakland since ‘95 and hasn’t lost at that venue since 2002. However, five games during the Chiefs six-game victory string at Oakland have been decided by just seven points or less. KC owns a 126-to-86 margin over that six-game span, an average margin of victory of just 6.7 points per game.

Regardless of site, Kansas City has won 10 of the last 13 contests in this AFC West feud. While KC has been dominant in the Chiefs-Raiders series of late, 11 outings during that 13-game stretch have been decided by seven points or less. The most recent meeting was no exception as Oakland eked out a 13- 10 victory at Arrowhead (9/20). Just 31 total points (263-232) separate the two teams over that 13-game span, meaning the average margin in those games has been just 2.9 ppg. The Chiefs defense has held the Raiders to 20 points or less in six of the last seven meetings between the two squads. Dating back to 2001, 13 of the last 17 games in this series have been decided by seven points or less.

Kansas City returns to Arrowhead for its first home game in four weeks as the Chiefs host Pittsburgh (11/22), while the Raiders have a home date vs. Cincinnati (11/22).

THE SERIES
Kansas City owns a 53-46-2 advantage over Oakland in regular and postseason play. The Chiefs have also beaten Denver 53 times, tying for the most victories the Chiefs have accumulated against any opponent. The Chiefs are 2-1 against Oakland in postseason play. Oakland won the initial meeting between the two teams this season by a 13-10 margin at Arrowhead (9/20). The Raiders haven’t registered a sweep of the Chiefs since 2001.

The Chiefs are 29-11 (.725) overall vs. the Raiders dating back to ‘90, including a ‘91 AFC playoff tilt. The Chiefs had a nine-game winning streak snapped in 2007 at home against the Raiders, the longest victory stretch by either squad in this series, which is in its 50th season. That nine-game winning streak against the Raiders ranks as the second-longest mark by the Chiefs against any one opponent, behind an 11-game winning streak over Denver from ‘64-69.

Kansas City has registered a 14-5 (.737) regular season record against the Raiders at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Oakland-Alameda Colesium since ‘90. Kansas City claimed a 20-13 win in the club’s most recent trip to Oakland (11/30/08). The Chiefs have won six straight games at Oakland, tying San Diego for the longest such streak against the Raiders in league history. Kansas City owns a pair of postseason wins against the Raiders, including a 17-7 win in the ‘69 AFL Championship Game (1/4/70) that sent the Chiefs to Super Bowl IV. Kansas City also claimed a 10-6 victory in the fi rst postseason contest played at Arrowhead (12/28/91).
