Q&A with TODD HALEY - 8/18

Aug 18, 2009, 6:33:52 PM

Q: Is there one thing after last week’s game that you’ve used as a point of emphasis this week?

TODD HALEY: “No, again just getting back to work which I think we’ve done a good job of so far. I thought that today was another good practice, good energy and good competitiveness. If there was any one thing it was probably just staying on the offense a little bit to get going, make something happen.”

Q: What are your thoughts on Barry Richardson?

HALEY: “Think Barry has a chance. He’s a guy who used the off-season program to his benefit. Lost more weight than anybody else in the entire off-season program, got himself in condition, got himself much stronger which he is continuing to work on. He should continue to get stronger as we go forward. He’s made progress daily, not without some ups and downs. It’s not picture perfect, by any means – a work in progress - but I think he’s created some competition at the right tackle position.”

Q: Is this a case where you’re looking at him with the ones?

HALEY: “I think this is just trying to find the best players or the best fit for us. Going back to what I’ve said all along, the guys who give us the best chance to win. This is an opportunity for a young guy to have a legitimate chance.”

Q: So you expect he’ll start for you this…

HALEY: “We’ll talk about personnel in a day or so but right now he was up there for a reason. We’ll see where we go from here.”

Q: Is Dwayne Bowe back in good standing with you?

HALEY: “I thought today was another good practice. He showed up some. He’s making progress.”

Q: Are you concerned about your quarterback spot? They’re over-throwing, under-throwing a little bit.

HALEY: “I think in general across the board for us to have a chance we’re going to have to play pretty good football. I don’t know that anyone can play perfect but we’re going to have to play error-free; we’re not going be able to beat ourselves whether it’s poor throws, penalties, turnovers, whatever.

“I’m always concerned with the quarterback. I thought today we threw the ball around a little bit. We had some nice runs, especially in that last drill coming out. Guys were coming off the ball and making things happen. But I thought in the passing games there were some positives. I’m looking forward to looking at tape to see how it looks.”

Q: Has Matt been the best quarterback you’ve had here in camp?

HALEY: “I’ll hold out on answering that right now.”

Q: What did Croyle do? Did he just get the play wrong?

HALEY: “There were a couple of errors there on successive plays and I just wanted to get somebody else in there.”

Q: Did he get the second play wrong?

HALEY: “I heard differing opinions and we’ll have to talk about that tonight.”

Q: Brett Favre is now back. Your thoughts on him coming back?

HALEY: “One of the great players of all time. We went up there to the Meadowlands last year and he had probably one of his better games in a long time against us. So, I don’t have fond memories of Brett Favre.”

Q: Mike Vrabel said he didn’t think that a veteran quarterback could come back this late?

HALEY: “I’m just worried about this house that’s on fire and I’m trying to keep it from burning down.”

Q: How do you balance the financial commitment a team has made to one player with finding the best guy to play?

HALEY: “I’ve been taught, and it’s what I love about this situation: the best guys are going to play. I’ve never been taught to worry about money or how much money somebody is making. I’ve been fortunate enough to be around head coaches and strong personalities that way. Again, that was one of the most attractive things about this situation because we’re going to play with the guys that give us the best chance to win. Period. No other things are going to factor into that.”

Q: Earlier in the day you said Q. Lawrence was afraid going across the middle. Is there a tendency for players to do that?

HALEY: “Most everybody is afraid and that comes with the territory of being an NFL receiver. I mean you’re going to have to go places that probably aren’t too comfortable. Again, it goes back to a couple of days ago and what I expect from a receiver group. They pride themselves specifically on making the tough catches. To me a tough catch is a slant with a linebacker flying out who’s going to hit you in the mouth, an end cut with a safety looking you up and between the hashes. He’s had a couple of balls between the hashes that he hasn’t quite exhibited or shown what I want to see so that’s got to change. There have been great receivers who have admitted they’re scared.”
