Chiefs QB Matt Cassel Signs Contract Extension
Jul 14, 2009, 1:25:00 PMThe Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that QB Matt Cassel has signed a multi-year extension with the club. The Chiefs acquired Cassel in a trade with New England on February 28th.
“We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come,” stated Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt. “His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization.”
General Manager Scott Pioli echoed Hunt’s sentiments. “We are happy to announce that the Chiefs and Matt have entered into a multi-year commitment,” said Pioli. “Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community. His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players.”
Cassel (6-4, 230) has played in 30 games (15 starts) during his four-year NFL career. He has completed 349 of 555 passes (62.9%) for 3,946 yards with 23 TDs and 13 INTs, good for an 88.2 rating. In addition, he has 85 carries for 298 yards with three TDs. Cassel has also played in four postseason contests and was a member of New England’s Super Bowl XLII squad. He originally entered the NFL as the first of New England’s two seventh-round picks (230th overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft.
The Northridge, California native played in 25 games at Southern California, completing 20 of 33 passes for 192 yards. Cassel served as the backup to Heisman Trophy winning QBs Carson Palmer and Matt Leinhart for the Trojans. Cassel was a prep standout at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, California.
