DE Glenn Dorsey Gives "Big" at Local Boys & Girls Club
Jun 19, 2009, 4:58:24 PMOn the field, Kansas City Chiefs DE Glen Dorsey spends his
time making life more difficult for the opposition. Off of the field, however, is a completely different story. In the
short time he has donned the Red and Gold, Dorsey has shown a commitment toward improving the Kansas City community
through its youth. Dorsey and his newly established “Dream Big Foundation” recently accentuated that point with the
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.
Flanked by children from the Club’s Thornberry Unit, the gregarious Dorsey announced that he was donating approximately $5,000 worth of athletic equipment to the center. Through this donation, countless youth in the Kansas City area will have the opportunity to experience the benefits of athletics. It is Dorsey’s goal to improve his adopted home by impacting the lives of youth. In this way, he hopes these children can fulfill their potential.
“This was awesome,” reflected Dorsey before leaving the Thornberry Unit. “The kids were going crazy when I came in. But for me to donate these items and spend time with them, that’s what it’s about. When I was a kid, I would never even think that an NFL player would take the time to visit with me, let and bring out all these cool items to play with. I’m glad I had a chance to give them this experience. It truly touched me.”
A grizzled veteran when it comes to giving back, Dorsey is no stranger to assisting adolescents. Last season, he served as the Chiefs Toys for Tots spokesperson. Continuing that momentum, Dorsey is establishing the Dream Big Foundation as a vehicle to reach children both in Kansas City as well as his native Gonzales, LA. The foundation’s title is derived from a phrase that’s close to Dorsey’s heart. While in college at LSU, he began tagging all his visits with youth by noting, “even if you’re from a small town, you can dream big and make things happen.”
This collaboration between the Chiefs and the Clubs continues a long-standing partnership. For nearly 100 years, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City has promoted the development of self-esteem, values and skills for boys and girls, ages 5-18, with special emphasis on youth from disadvantaged circumstances. This year, nearly 7,000 children will participate in Club activities under the guidance of caring, trained staff and volunteers.
