Chiefs Enter Final Week of OTAs

Jun 15, 2009, 4:24:17 PM

twitterTorrential rains forced the Chiefs indoors on Monday morning as the club entered its final week of OTAs (Organized Team Activities) at the Truman Sports Complex. Head coach Todd Haley put the club through an approximately 90-minute workout, marking the 11th of the club’s scheduled 14 OTA sessions. The club is scheduled to be back on the field once again on Tuesday with the team’s final two OTAs slated for Wednesday and Thursday.

While the club’s practice sessions may be drawing to a close this week, Haley is setting the bar high for his team once this round of voluntary on-field work concludes.

“What is critical now, once we finish the week, is what these guys do,” he observed. “We will keep the rookies here and they will be here working out for a few weeks and that will help them. Some of these other guys that have worked really hard now, how they handle this time off will be critical. We don’t want to give anything back. Our goal is to come to training camp in condition and not have to play or practice our way into condition.”

During Monday’s session, Haley and his staff again worked on two-minute offense, as well as Red Zone situations. TE Tony Curtis made an impressive grab in the back of the end zone during seven-on-seven drills in the Red Zone. WR Bobby Engram also made an acrobatic grab in double coverage during the seven-on-seven period. The club’s two-minute session concluded when S Bernard Pollard made an INT in the end zone on fourth down.

Arrowhead Notes

  • CB Donald Washington was able to join the club for the first time since rookie mini-camp. A fourth-round draft choice out of Ohio State, Washington’s class graduated over the weekend, allowing him to re-join his teammates in Kansas City. According to Haley, Washington will be on a crash course to catch up with the rest of the squad over the next month. “We will have somebody hanging with him to work and get him up to speed,” the head coach noted. “We are going to catch him up in all areas. (Strength and Conditioning Coach) Cedric Smith will be working with him in the weight area and out on the field. We will have coaches working with him mentally.”
  • Haley indicated that DT Ron Edwards rejoined his teammates after a stint on the rehab field.
  • Haley revealed that he threw a curveball to his club on Friday. What was scheduled to be an hour-and-a-half practice session, began with a walk-thru on the practice field and concluded at a local bowling alley. “I thought since we had worked very hard as a group (over the past week), we went and had a little team-building work at the bowling alley,” Haley indicated. “It was well attended and went over well.”

While there was no word on who rolled the high score at Friday’s event, WR Terrance Copper would be our pick to be the Pete Weber of the Chiefs bowling world. Copper tells kcchiefs.com that he typically hits the lanes three times a week during the off-season and boasts a career high score of 208.
