Q&A with LB MONTY BEISEL - 4/9

Apr 09, 2009, 12:54:11 PM

Q: What is it like to be back in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform?

MONTY BEISEL: “It is great. I have been back here for about two weeks now. It is good, all of my family is close by, just north of Lawrence (KS). Of all the places I could have come back to it is definitely one that is comfortable and I am looking forward to getting out there and getting things rolling.”

Q: Where did you attend high school?

BEISEL: “I went to Douglass High School in Douglass, Kansas down by Wichita. My first three years I went to Victoria, Kansas out by Hayes (Kansas).”

Q: What are head coach Todd Haley and GM Scott Pioli like to work with?

BEISEL: “I think the best way to look at both of those guys is to look at what they have done in the past. Obviously, Scott has been in New England for the past number of years and what they have done there developing that program with (head coach Bill) Belichick. You could kind of see the type of guys he likes to bring in and develop. I think they are starting to bring in those type of guys here and incorporate into the group of guys we already have.

“With Todd, you look at what he has done over the past couple years with his offense, Kurt (Warner) and those guys. I think a lot of what you have seen in the past, they are what they are. What you see is what you get. It is probably what you are going to see here developing over the next few months. We will start to come in here and develop that chemistry and that core group. I think what you saw in the past is what you are going to see in the future.”

Q: Does being here with Todd Haley and Scott Pioli feel similar to being in Arizona and New England?

BEISEL: “Absolutely. We have been here working out for two weeks now and it is déjà vu bringing the program in from New England and Arizona. It is the same program just a different group of guys. We are developing chemistry now having the guys working out and that is what we are doing and we are having fun doing it. We have a mini-camp coming up in about a week and we will get to see where we are at as far as schemes go. Right now we are devoting all of our time to working with Cedric (Smith) in the weight room and getting things going as far as individuals.”

Q: Is there a common thread to all the players GM Scott Pioli brings in to an organization?

BEISEL: “I think both Todd and Scott just look for smart guys that can play football. They are looking for football players and guys that might be able to play multiple positions and do different things, whether it is offense, defense or special teams. The more you can do, the better. I think a lot of the guys that I have seen that have been brought in from the free agent market this year are guys like that. I think they look at guys from a personality standpoint and see where the pieces fit and what kind of chemistry guys will have together. From what I have seen in the last couple weeks everything is fitting together. The making of a good season and everything to come is starting to work out.”

Q: Do they value the fact that you are versatile?

BEISEL: “Yeah, I think that is the one thing that has kind of helped me through the course of my career, being a versatile player and doing a lot of different things as far as playing multiple linebacker positions and special teams. That is what I tell all these young guys when they come into the league is to be as versatile as you can and it helps you get the years under your belt and contribute to your team. It makes you more valuable. So that is what I have tried to do throughout the years. That is what I’ve noticed about the guys we have brought in, they have done a lot of different things.”

Q: Would you consider Todd Haley and Scott Pioli as hands on guys?

BEISEL: “That is what I love about those guys. They are the guys down there in the weight room working out with you every day. You could be over on the bench press and they may be on the treadmill getting some work in. That is what it is all about. When it comes down to it, you go through all the business aspects but it is just a group of guys working together. At the end of the day we are hand-in-hand working with the coaches and they are working with us. The better the chemistry we have with the coaches, it makes the team that much better.”

Q: Do you know what defensive scheme you will use yet?

BEISEL: “We haven’t sat down with the coaches as of yet. Next week we will be getting into mini-camps, right now we are just developing the chemistry I have been talking about. Who knows? Your guess is probably as good as mine, but from what we have done in the past, I am guessing we will do a little of everything. As far as nailing down 3-4 or 4-3, I think we could go either way with that. A lot of the guys have been asking me. They are like, ‘What do you think we are going to be doing? What scheme?’ From what we have done in the past in New England in Arizona, I think it will be a little bit of everything. We will see.”

Q: What do you bring into Kansas City now that is different from what you brought in the past?

BEISEL: “I think the one thing is, as a young player when I was growing up, I was looking at the guys ahead of me like (LB) Donnie Edwards, (LB) Marvcus Patten and (TE) Tony Gonzalez, guys that were years ahead of me in the league and to see how they developed themselves and worked to become pros. Traveling throughout the league the past four years since I have been gone, being in New England, all New England is, is a group of veterans that know how to win and be professional. That is what we developed in Arizona the past couple years and that is what we are hoping to develop here.

“Bringing guys like myself in here is about teaching the young guys that have talent to learn how to win. The difference between winning and losing in this league is so minute that the smallest thing we do in the off-season might be the difference between winning a game or losing a game during the season. Right now we are trying to develop that chemistry and do what we do so when we are out on that field and we have to make that split-second decision, we can make the winning decision.”
