Herm Edwards Postgame Comments - Panthers

Oct 06, 2008, 8:33:03 AM

HERMAN EDWARDS: “I don’t think anybody – our staff and I know I didn’t – saw that coming given the way we played last week (vs. Denver). We were a confident team after last week’s game and then we come in here and act like we’ve never played before. It wasn’t very good: coaching, playing, anything.

“Good thing is we’ve got two weeks before we play another game and we’re going to have to figure some things out defensively, especially against the run, and offensively how to make a first down. It’s puzzling to me. You play one week and then you play the next week like this - same players, same coaches. We’ve got to figure it out during the bye week.”

Q: Given the youth factor, shouldn’t you guys be beyond something like this?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, we should have played better. We played well last week and this week we play like this - same players, same coaches calling the offenses and the defenses. It’s puzzling. We’ve got to figure it out though.

“They made big plays. They ran the ball. I can’t tell you exactly what happened because I haven’t watched the tape. It wasn’t good at all.”

Q: Did you expect more out of the pass rush especially with their tackles out?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, we didn’t get much pressure on the passer. We tried to blitz a bunch but we didn’t get there even blitzing. One blitz we had and got there and we didn’t pick up the running back coming out of the backfield. No one covered him and he scored a touchdown. They’re a good football team but we didn’t play like we played last week. I thought we started out okay but then for some reason we just never did anything on either side of the ball to get any momentum going offensively or defensively.”

Q: How do you explain this happening?

EDWARDS: “I don’t know. I’m puzzled too. You play one week against a 3-0 football team and this is a 3-1 football team – a good, powerful football team – and we just didn’t play very well. We turned the ball over some, didn’t stop the run, couldn’t make a first down. I don’t know. We’ve got two weeks to figure it out.”

Q: Is there a chance you might go back to Tyler Thigpen at QB?

EDWARDS: “I don’t know what we’re going to do there. Brodie (Croyle) will be back too, so we’ll see where he’s at. If he’s healthy to go we’ll make a decision on that. We have two weeks before we have to do that.”
