THE MATCH-UP

Kansas City faces Tennessee at home for a second consecutive season as the Titans invade Arrowhead on Sunday. The Chiefs are coming off a loss in their most recent contest at Carolina (10/5), but return to Arrowhead where the club has compiled a 10-3 (.769) record in October games going back to 2002. Tennessee registered a hard-fought 13-10 win at Baltimore (10/5). The Titans are off to their best start in franchise history at 5-0. Prior to tonight’s Giants-Browns game, the Titans and the Giants (4-0) are the NFL’s only two remaining undefeated clubs. The Titans are propelled by a staunch defense that leads the league in both turnover differential (+6) and scoring defense (11.2 ppg). Tennessee has a league-high 14 takeaways, while KC is tied for fifth with 11.

QB Kerry Collins has performed admirably for the Titans and has guided the club to victory in each of his four starts in 2008, including a comeback win vs. the Ravens. This contest will likely signal the return of QB Brodie Croyle to the Kansas City lineup. Croyle, who was injured on Opening Day at New England (9/7), would be seeking KC’s second home win of the season.

Dating back to Tennessee’s 26-17 win at Arrowhead (12/16/07), the Titans have won eight straight regular season contests, the longest active winning streak in the league and the club’s longest since winning eight straight in 2000. The franchise’s last nine-game winning stretch came in ‘93 when the Houston Oilers went on a franchise-best 11-game run. However, that streak was halted in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game vs. Kansas City (1/16/94).

Dating back to ‘95, the Chiefs have haulted an opponent’s winning streak of three or more games on 13 different occasions at Arrowhead. Kansas City’s most recent streak-stopping effort came in the club’s last home contest which resulted in a 33-19 victory vs. Denver (9/28). That win snapped a four-game Broncos victory streak that dated back to 2007. Tennessee hasn’t won back-to-back games at Arrowhead since doing it in ‘75 and ‘78.

Up next for Kansas City is a trip to face the N.Y. Jets (10/26) as head coach Herm Edwards faces the franchise he coached from 2001-05. Tennessee hosts Indianapolis in a Monday Night Football match-up at LP Field (10/27).

THE SERIES
The Chiefs own a 27-19 edge in 46 regular and postseason games played between these two original AFL franchises, including a 2-0 mark in postseason play. Kansas City’s 27 wins against Tennessee are the club’s most against any non-division opponent. The Titans registered a 26-17 win last season at Arrowhead (12/16/07). The Chiefs won a 49-38 shootout (12/14/04) in the most recent contest in this series in Nashville. Kansas City has won five of the last seven games against the Titans/Oilers dating back to a win in the ‘93 AFC Divisional Playoffs. Kansas City hasn’t lost back-to-back regular season games against the Titans franchise since dropping four straight from ‘90-93 when the club was stationed in Houston.

Kansas City broke a string of four straight losses against Houston with a thrilling 24-19 win in a ‘93 AFC Divisional Playoff tilt, the final NFL postseason contest ever staged at the Astrodome (1/16/94). The red-hot Oilers had won 11 straight regular season games to close the ‘94 regular season behind QB Warren Moon, but the Chiefs rallied for 21 fourth-quarter points thanks to QB Joe Montana, RB Marcus Allen and a stifling defense that sacked Moon 9.0 times in KC’s most recent playoff win. The Chiefs then proceeded to win three straight regular season meetings with the then-Oilers in ‘94, ‘95 and ‘96.

By far the most dramatic clash between these two clubs came in the ‘62 AFL Championship Game when the Dallas Texans prevailed 20-17 in a double-OT thriller over the Houston Oilers. Texans K Tommy Brooker ended a 17-17 stalemate with a 35-yard FG to give the franchise the first of its three AFL titles. At 77 minutes and 54 seconds, that contest still ranks as the second-longest game in NFL history.
