Chiefs Elect 2008 Season Captains – Waters, Thomas, Surtain, McGraw

Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards announced on Thursday that the club has designated four players as captains for the
2008 season. Following a player vote, G Brian Waters was chosen to represent the offense, CB Patrick Surtain and LB Pat
Thomas were chosen to represent the defense and S Jon McGraw was elected to represent the special teams.
Waters (6-3, 320) has played in 116 games (102 starts) with the Chiefs. The three-time Pro Bowler (2004-06)
joined the Chiefs as a free agent in 2000 and was named AP first-team All-Pro in 2004 and 2005.
Surtain (5-11, 195) was acquired by Kansas City in a 2005 trade with Miami. The two-time Pro Bowler (2002-03)
owns 43 career takeaways (36 INTs and seven fumble recoveries). Surtain has appeared in 155 games (129 starts) during
his previous 10 NFL seasons, logging 603 tackles (481 solo), 36 INTs for 380 yards and two TDs. He has also racked up
7.5 sacks (-50.0 yards), a QB pressure, seven fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and 115 passes defensed.
Thomas (6-1, 237) joined the Chiefs as a free agent in October of last season after a three-year stint with
Jacksonville. Thomas earned the Chiefs starting assignment at middle linebacker during the 2008 training camp.
Originally a sixth-round draft pick of Jacksonville in the 2005 NFL Draft, Thomas has seen action in 18 contests (one
start) tallying 17 tackles (10 solo).
McGraw (6-3, 208) joined the Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent from Detroit in 2007. The Riley County
native and Kansas State alumnus originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (57th overall) of the N.Y. Jets in
the 2002 NFL Draft. McGraw has played in 70 regular season games (12 starts), registering 140 tackles (99 solo), three
interceptions, 11 passes defensed, two fumble recoveries, a pair of forced fumbles and 76 special teams tackles.
