This Week in Chiefs History

Aug 22, 2008, 12:12:19 PM by Brad Kuhbander

AUGUST 17 – 23

Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt was a proponent of playing preseason games in non-American Football League cities during the league’s formative years. He believed by taking the game to the people, the fan base of the league would only grow. No city was out of consideration which is why the Chiefs faced off against the Oakland Raiders on August 17, 1963 in Seattle, Washington.

Oakland got on the board first when QB Cotton Davidson hit RB Clemon Daniels for an 82-yard TD pass. Kansas City responded right back when QB Eddie Wilson had a one-yard sneak for a TD to cap a 77-yard touchdown drive. Kansas City got off to a quick start in the second quarter as E Chris Burford caught a 10-yard TD pass from Wilson.

Wilson continued his good game when he connected on a touchdown pass with Burford for the second time of the quarter. The 11-yard scoring pass put the Chiefs ahead at 21-7, a lead they carried into halftime.

The Raiders opened the second half with a 10-play, 66-yard scoring drive, capped by a QB Tom Flores 22-yard touchdown pass to WR Art Powell. Wilson threw his third touchdown pass of the game, this one covering four yards to TE Fred Arbanas. WR/HB Frank Jackson ended the scoring with a 50-yard touchdown catch as the Chiefs held on for a 35-21 victory.

Over the years, the Chiefs would play numerous preseason contests in different locales, including Abilene, Texas, Little Rock, Arkansas, Lithonia, Georgia and Wichita, Kansas, just to name a few.

The opinions offered in this column do not necessarily reflect those of the Kansas City Chiefs.
