Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 8/12

Aug 12, 2008, 6:40:57 PM

Q: The rain held off this afternoon?

HERM EDWARDS: “The rain was good. It held up for us so that was good. We got something accomplished, I though. We turned the ball over a lot today on offense. The ball was on the ground a lot today. Good defense, not good offense.”

Q: S DaJuan Morgan had a good practice?

EDWARDS: “Yeah. He made some plays. He’s that kind of player, you know, he’s a sudden kind of player. He’s got pretty good ball skills, good instincts, he’s a good tackler. That kind of thing.”

Q: Is there any interest in picking up free agent K Jay Feely?

EDWARDS: “We know what he’s capable of doing. We’re going to continue to look at our guys (Ks Connor Barth and Nick Novak). We’re going to let these guys kick. Now last week we scored some touchdowns, and I’ll always take touchdowns over field goals. But we have to wait and see. Nothing is out of the realm of trying to get better. We know he’s a veteran kicker. Right now we’re letting these two guys compete and we’ll see what happens.”

Q: How are you feeling with the draft picks so far?

EDWARDS: “They’ve been pretty good. The guys that got hurt are coming back. (DT Glenn) Dorsey came back and practiced a little bit today that was good to see. I think they’ve done a good job. They’re starting to understand what’s expected of them. They’re practicing well so we’ll see. Now they’ve got to go play again. It’s another week.”

Q: Dorsey was in for about 10-12 plays yesterday and today. Is that what you mean by bringing him back slowly?

EDWARDS: “Yeah. We don’t want to rush him. There’s no need to rush him. We’ve got two more preseason games after this one. He’ll be ready to play.”

Q: Is he going to be ready to play on Saturday?

EDWARDS: “We’ll see. He could be but I’m cautious. If I feel that a guy isn’t 100 percent, especially a young guy, there’s no need to put them out there.”

Q: What happened to (DE Turk) McBride today?

EDWARDS: “He strained his hamstring, so we’ll see about that. He said it cramped up on him.”

Q: Are you okay with your depth at linebacker?

EDWARDS: “I want those hurt guys to get well. That’s a problem, because if you go into preseason games with hurt linebackers and then those poor guys have to play special teams and by the third quarter everybody’s worn out. So hopefully we can get some bodies back, you know, (LB) Donnie (Edwards) is not ready and Napo (LB Napoleon Harris) so that’s two guys gone.”

Q: Good thing you had a fullback in Oliver Hoyte who can play linebacker?

EDWARDS: “Yeah. That’s a saving grace right there. Because then we really would have been short.”

Q: Is he going to make the team?

EDWARDS: “He’s competing to be there so we’ll see what happens. There are a lot of things that are going to happen between now and when the season starts.”

Q: How is this team doing in picking up the new offense?

EDWARDS: “They’re doing pretty good. They really are. They’re starting to understand and feel comfortable in it. You’ve just got to keep playing and getting better. That’s our whole key is just try to get better every day.”

Q: How far away is this offensive line from playing with cohesiveness?

EDWARDS: ”(T) Brandon’s (Albert) not in there. I think when he comes back that’s going to help. But the rest of those guys are going to practice together. Herbie (T Herb Taylor) is doing a good job over at the left tackle position. So they’re better. They’re a lot better than they were in the spring. But we’ve still got a long way to go. There’s a lot of things we still have to improve on.”

Q: You’re taking the pads off tomorrow?

EDWARDS: “Just the bottoms. Shoulder pads will go on again tomorrow. So for the big guys it doesn’t really change, you just get to wear shorts.”
