RIVER FALLS WRAP: Day 17

Aug 11, 2008, 4:04:47 PM

Breakdown: The Chiefs attended morning meetings before a 3:45 PM practice in full pads. After individual drills, the plan is for the team to concentrate on passing situations after a 10-minute walk-thru.

Sight of the Night: Chiefs rookie DT Glenn Dorsey, suited up and practiced in full pads with the rest of the team. Dorsey participated in team drills and some 11-on-11 after participating in solo drills only for the past two days.

Play of the Day:  WR Maurice Price made a juggling catch while tip-toeing the right sideline for a beautiful reception. The pass came from QB Brodie Croyle, who three plays later hit WR Dwayne Bowe 20-yards down field on a perfectly executed crossing route. Croyle had another excellent day in camp and is showing a swagger that reveals his confidence.

Looking Ahead: T-minus four days and counting. The Chiefs return home on Friday and host the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday. Preparations are well underway both in River Falls and back at Arrowhead for the Chiefs to host their first contest of 2008.

Weather Watch: It was a bit cold this morning, well, colder than most people would expect for August. It was certainly sweatshirt or windbreaker weather. It warmed up to a legitimate Wisconsin summer temperature of 77 degrees later in the afternoon. Kansas City saw a high of 81 on the day.

Look Who’s Talking: “The thing about these guys is they generally rally when you ask them to in practice.”
- Head coach Herm Edwards

Notable Campers: Clark Judge of CBS Sportsline and Bill Williamson from ESPN.com are in camp today. In addition Sirius NFL Radio hosts Vic Carucci and Gil Brandt are in camp today and tomorrow. The duo’s show “The Red Zone” will air live from the University Center on Sirius channel 124. The pair will be here today and tomorrow and will air between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM central time.

Longtime Chiefs fan G. Brent Wohlgemuth of Independence, Missouri is making his first NFL training camp appearance. He stopped to chat with the Chiefs PR staff yesterday. His family has owned Chiefs season tickets for 42 years, dating back to the club’s days at Municipal Stadium. Apparently, he is also a culinary Chiefs fan and has offered to make banana bread for Coach Edwards and the coaching staff.

Reader Questions: What’s going on with the left DE spot?
-Mikal Christopherson (Ackley, Iowa)

Since the departure of DE Jared Allen to the Vikings (you may have heard about it) the Chiefs have auditioned several candidates for the left DE position. DE Alfonso Boone started the Chiefs preseason game against the Bears and DEs Johnny Dingle, Jonal Saint-Dic, Turk McBride, Jason Parker and Brian Johnston saw playing time throughout the game. McBride has been practicing there since the Bears game and Coach Edwards has been impressed with what he’s seen. Look for McBride (a former second-round pick) and Boone to play there for a good chunk of the rest of the preseason.

How many WRs are the Chiefs planning on keeping?
- Alex England

Certainly the millions (and the millions) of WR Bobby Sippio fans are waiting on bated breath for the outcome of the two forthcoming roster cuts. After all, we wouldn’t want them to default on all those adjustable-rate loans they took out for No. 83 Chiefs gear would we? Think of the economy.

At this point, it’s hard to say what will happen. Certainly the coaching staff has some idea of who will be cut and who won’t be, but it’s still early. All we have to look at is previous experience and the one, lone preseason game. WR Dwayne Bowe is clearly the team’s no. 1 receiver and WR Devard Darling started opposite Bowe last Thursday. Every other WR on the roster, save for the injured rookie return man WR Kevin Robinson, played significant minutes. That leaves us with quite the quandary. Beyond Bowe and Darling, WRs Jeff Webb and rookie Will Franklin seem like solid bets to make the roster. Ten WRs dot the Chiefs camp roster, meaning half of them will probably be gone at the end of the month. So if the Chiefs do keep five receivers, that means there’s quite a battle brewing for that fifth, and possibly final, spot.
