RIVER FALLS WRAP: Day Three

Jul 27, 2008, 7:45:22 PM

By Brock Ascher

bowedorseyBreakdown: A more relaxed atmosphere permeated the Wisconsin-River Falls campus on Sunday as the Chiefs had just a 3:45 PM practice scheduled. Players attended meetings in the morning and were given the opportunity to attend an afternoon chapel service. Some rested up for what will prove to be a testing week ahead, others found ways to relax and pass the time. A deck of cards found its way into the University Center lobby and a game evolved between the offensive and defensive lines.

Practice went ahead at 3:45 PM with the Chiefs donning their spider pads and shorts.

Notable Campers: Jay Glazer from FOX Sports and Charley Casserly of CBS Sports arrived in camp today. They joined dozens of other media members already in town.

Weather Watch: Skies were overcast with rain on the horizon. The showers held off and the day was quite cool for afternoon practice. Back in Kansas City, the heat index once again rose near triple digits.

Looking Ahead: The day-to-day grind of camp kicks into gear this week as the “meet, eat, practice, repeat” mantra is put to full use. Players will settle into a training camp groove as one day’s schedule becomes indistinguishable from another. Players and fans can expect a morning practice and an afternoon practice every day until Thursday, when the Minnesota Vikings come to town. Tuesday AM’s session will be special teams only session.

Look Who’s Talking: “I’ve got to get ready for cheese curds and New Glarus Spotted Cow.”

-Jay Glazer on keeping fit on the road. Glazer’s evening plans included a stop at the Copper Kettle to partake in a couple local delicacies.

Play of the Day: Chiefs V.P. of Player Personnel Bill Kuharich batted away a Damon Huard pass that escaped the flat and ended up on the sidelines. The play was notable because Kuharich saved the head of Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt from a painful impact.

Reader Questions:
Is there going to be a legitimate battle for the QB position?
- Matt Medlock

Brodie Croyle, Damon Huard and Tyler Thigpen are all in camp and taking snaps. Head coach Herm Edwards is keeping a watchful eye on the quarterback position, but Brodie has been taking the majority of snaps with the first team. Given his progress and the team’s dedication to youth, barring injury Brodie is expected to be the starting quarterback Opening Day at New England.

Who’s going to play the nickle CB position? How many DBs are going to make the team?
- inskeepd

Right now, it’s way too early to tell. CBs Patrick Surtain and Tyron Brackenridge have both worked at that position in the past. As of today, there are 14 DBs on the team, including eight corners and six safeties. That number will be cut when NFL teams cut rosters to 65 and then to 53 players in late August. As for how many DBs will make the team – nobody is sure at this point. Camp is all about competition, and if enough DBs make the grade they will make the team.
