Herm Edwards Continues Annual Tradition in California

hermcampcaliThe Kansas City version of the Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp took place a mere six weeks ago, but Coach Edwards was busy toiling away on another. This more established version recently took place in Edwards’ native Seaside, California. Now in its 13th season, this camp was held at the California State University-Monterey Bay Sports Complex. Since its inception, the West Coast version of the camp has raised funds in support of area high school football programs as well as the Boys & Girls Clubs, where Edwards spent countless hours during his youth. Just as it always has been, the camp was completely free to kids ages 9-17.

While the football aspects of the camp are important, Coach Edwards believes there are many other things to be learned. During the course of the week, he shared his seven core concepts – Expectations, Priorities, Commitment, Choices, Integrity, Teamwork and Sportsmanship – with those in attendance. After introducing them, Coach Edwards spoke to the campers on their values both in life and on the football field. Furthermore, he instilled these lessons by forging a sense of confidence and camaraderie in the campers.

“I feel that these youngsters leave our camp with a solid understanding of some basic football fundamentals,” Edwards observed during a break in the camp’s action. “More importantly, I hope to send them back to their communities and schools as better citizens and students. Hopefully by the end of the week they’ve gained some self-esteem. That’s what it is all about. I think self-esteem is a thing that a lot of them come away with.”

The number of participants at California’s Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp has grown every year as it delivers a meaningful and enjoyable experience time after time. Since the camp has become so successful these past 12 years, it was important for Coach Edwards to maintain a similar one in Kansas City.

Sure enough, the story of success was no different in the Midwest, as registration filled to capacity in less than a week. With over 1,100 campers and 150 volunteer coaches attending the Kansas City version in each of its first two years, all involved took away some very important life lessons in addition to some newly honed football skills.

For an individual like Herm Edwards, who makes a living instilling his beliefs with others, it should come as no surprise that these two camps have flourished. Be it in the Heart of America or on the Nation’s West Coast, countless children have been touched thanks to the dedication of the Chiefs 10th Head Coach in team annuals.
