Chiefs LB Edwards & TE Gonzalez Host "Shop With A Jock" Outing for Youths
Dec 03, 2007, 6:54:34 PMEvery child dreams of the typical Christmas morning
scenario, waking up far too early, running downstairs ignoring the cold floor on your bare feet, and the wonderful
sight of presents under the tree. However, this time of year brings a harsh reality along with the sight of lights and
sounds of bells. Throughout the Kansas City area there are children that wont get the opportunity to sit around a tree
overflowing with gifts on December 25 due to the fact that they are concentrating more on finding food to eat the next
day.
Kansas City Chiefs LB Donnie Edwards and TE Tony Gonzalez have created an opportunity for these kid’s dreams to become a reality. This week at a local department store Donnie and Tony hosted the annual “Shop with a Jock” event. The California natives, along with over a dozen of their teammates, welcomed 50 foster children from the Love Fund at this special night of holiday shopping. Each child received a $100 gift certificate and were partnered with a player that’s adorned in a fuzzy red Santa stocking. Members of the Red and Gold then led each child around the store as they picked out gifts for loved ones, and possibly a toy or two for themselves.
“Shop with a Jock” was started by Donnie during his first stint with the Chiefs. When he initially left the Chiefs, Tony decided that it was a tradition worth keeping alive. Now that the two have reunited at Arrowhead, they joined forces.
Gonzalez formed the “Tony Gonzalez Foundation” in 1998 to service those who face obstacles on a daily basis. The “Donnie Edwards Best Defense Foundation” was established by Edwards in 2000 to benefit various charity efforts in Missouri, Kansas and his native California.
