Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 11/28
Nov 29, 2007, 8:57:10 AM
Q: Where was Chris Terry today?
HERM EDWARDS: “Our prayers need to be with Chris Terry today. His mom passed away, so he went back home to bury his
mother.”
Q: How was your quarterback today? [Brodie Croyle]
EDWARDS: “He’s sore, so we’ll see tomorrow where he’s at. If he can go or he can’t go, tomorrow we’ll find out.”
Q: Could it be a game day thing?
EDWARDS: “It could be. We’ll wait as long as we can. He didn’t practice today.”
Q: Obviously, he struggled with that injury a little bit in the last game, but went back. But was it any worse than
it appeared?
EDWARDS: “Oh yeah, and he fought through it and played. That’s the kind of kid he is. He’s tough; he’s a tough guy.
He got through it but he was so sore the next day he could barely get around. He actually got kicked in the back with a
knee.”
Q: When did it happen?
EDWARDS: “It happened on the roll-out, one of the first plays.”
Q: Because he’s a young guy does he need the work or can you go all the way until Friday?
EDWARDS: “You could wait with him. Remember, he’s taken reps like a starter from the beginning. Now he’s played in
two games – started two games. But we’re not going to put him in harm’s way if he’s not mobile enough to get out of the
way. That doesn’t make any sense.”
Q: So, Damon Huard would be ready then?
EDWARDS: “Oh yeah, he had a good day today.”
Q: How much work would Croyle need to be ready to play? Would Friday be enough?
EDWARDS: “Yeah, probably. But we’ll see.”
Q: Is it Surtain’s shoulder or head?
EDWARDS: “It’s kind of his shoulder right here [points]. He’s better but he didn’t practice today.”
Q: Do you expect he’ll play on Sunday?
EDWARDS: “I don’t know. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”
Q: Is this the first week where you’ve had this many injuries?
EDWARDS: “Yeah, and it’s the time of the year too. Guys get a little nicked but I’m hoping that most of them will
come back. If they don’t we’ll ship the other guys in.”
Q: You said that Larry Johnson was running around today. Do you expect him to do anything next week or participate
in practice?
EDWARDS: “I don’t know. He jogged around today on it and came up to me and had a big smile on his face. He looked
good. So, we’ll see where he’s at. Now, he didn’t participate with the team, but he jogged around.”
Q: Is he out for this week?
EDWARDS: “Oh, he’s just jogging around right now.”
Q: But you’re thinking he might practice next week?
EDWARDS: “Well, we’ll see. I don’t want to say yeah and then he can’t.”
Q: Does it help having an advantage with cold and bad weather because the Chargers are used to the warm weather?
EDWARDS: “I don’t think so. You say all that good stuff but once you play both teams have to play in it. It’s not
that one team’s tougher because you play in the cold. San Diego played in one of the coldest games ever in Cincinnati
in a playoff game. It kept going overtime and was below zero.
“Professional players adapt. It’s no different than it used to be in Miami where they had a lot of home games at the
beginning of the season and it was hot. Teams would come down from the north and people thought they couldn’t play
because it was hot. I just think that you can use all that stuff but it doesn’t mean anything.”
Q: What are the Chargers doing now better or worse since you played them?
EDWARDS: “I just think what they’ve done defensively is they’re leading the league with 29 takes. They’ve taken the
ball away defensively and scored some touchdowns and offensively they’re playing with a lot more confidence. They’ve
won five out of seven or something since we played them.”
Q: Has Rivers gotten better from last year?
EDWARDS: “He’s had his ups and downs some but he played good last week. He made some big plays and is a good
quarterback.”
Q: John Carney didn’t have much time off between Jacksonville and here, but does he look good?
EDWARDS: “Oh yeah, you’re talking about a pro. This guy is a pro. If you play this long and kick this long you’ve
got this thing pretty much figured out. He came in like he’s been here all year. Just put the ball down and kicks it
through.”
Q: Did you watch him today?
EDWARDS: “The whole team did. He kicked about four or five and the whole team started clapping. They wanted to know
where his distance was.”
Q: Did you talk to him about his range?
EDWARDS: “Yeah, I know where it’s at. I know where he feels comfortable. I’m not going to tell anybody else.”
Q: We won’t tell San Diego.
EDWARDS: “Well, he was in San Diego for about 10 years so they know where it is. Can you imagine how many kicks this
guy has made over this career? He’s kicked in all kinds of weather.
“My wife was excited because she knows he went to Notre Dame and is a Catholic. So, now we have another person to go
to Mass with and that’s always good. He’s fine.
Q: But the team clapped for him?
EDWARDS: “Oh yeah, the first one through. When we make points around here it’s a big deal. A lot of the players were
asking, ‘hey, coach, didn’t he play when you played?’ I said, ‘almost, almost.’ We almost crossed paths.”
