Q&A with BRODIE CROYLE - 7/30
Jul 30, 2007, 7:11:49 PMQ: How has camp been going so far?
CROYLE: “It’s been a pretty good camp. We’ve been pretty efficient on offense. We’re throwing a lot at a bunch of young guys, but for the most part it’s been a good camp?
Q: Knowing that you have a chance to compete for a starting job is there some excitement or anxiety?
CROYLE: “There’s excitement, no doubt about it. But at the same time you have anxiety that you’re going to forget some of the stuff you’re supposed to know or forget some of the stuff you’ve learned while you’re here. I’m excited about the opportunity to compete and I’m just taking it one practice at a time.”
Q: How big of a difference is there for you from last year as a rookie to this year?
CROYLE: “There is a huge difference. I’m actually getting to practice this year. As far as knowing the offense, it’s night and day. Last year we had some struggles, but this year it’s a lot different.”
Q: How has the offense changed this year?
CROYLE: “It’s still basically the same thing. We’ve put a couple extra wrinkles in. When we get Dwayne Bowe in here we can go a little more three-wide to exploit our playmakers. It’s basically the same terminology with just a couple different wrinkles.”
Q: Did you have to have a different mindset coming into this year’s training camp?
CROYLE: “You can say you don’t, but yes. Last year I knew that I was coming in and basically I was going to be the number three. I was going to get a couple reps here and there, but basically I was there to learn from watching. Obviously it’s different this year and this is a position I’m glad to be in.”
Q: How did playing for a program like Alabama prepare you for this?
CROYLE: “It helps out. Obviously that’s a football-crazed state and it helps out with what’s going on now. If you let it get to you it can bother you, but if you just roll with it, then it’s just a 10-minute segment of your day when you talk to all of you.”
Q: When you are in the huddle, do you feel like it’s your team?
CROYLE: “Yeah, if you’re going to be a quarterback and step in the huddle and expect them to do what you say to do then you have to feel like it’s your team. But you can’t call it your team until you get out there and prove to them on Sundays that you’re going to make plays for them and you’re going to win games.”
Q: Do you feel like you have the edge right now over Damon Huard?
CROYLE: “No, we’re splitting reps basically right down the middle. We split up days who is going with the ones and they won’t make a decision I wouldn’t think until the preseason is over.”
Q: Do you feel like you’re ready to start?
CROYLE: “Oh yeah, I definitely feel like I’m ready to go. That’s what training camp is for, to get better and to improve on things that I need to improve on.”
Q: Are you looking at this like it’s your job to lose?
CROYLE: “I’ve never been told that. I’ve had people call me and say that they’ve read it’s my job to lose, but I’ve never been told that by my position coach and I’ve never been told that by my head coach. It’s just an open competition.”
Q: Do you feel pressure since there is sentiment that you are Coach Edwards’ guy?
CROYLE: “As I said earlier, you can let pressure affect you one way or another. As long as you enjoy high expectations and you enjoy your coach saying that you’re his guy or whatever then you can handle it that way. It’s been fun and I’m happy to be in this position. I wasn’t expecting to be here this early.”
Q: What are some of the things that you feel you need to work on?
CROYLE: “My overall game. I need to get the ball up quicker. It’s little things like don’t try to force things down the field when you have a back that you can get to second and five. I’ve probably been told that more times than anything.”
