Jul 19, 2007, 3:07:42 PM
Youth football and the Kansas City Chiefs are a very nice pairing! Be it working with countless youth organizations or aiding local high schools, youth football is at the forefront of the Chiefs focus. In conjunction with these efforts, the team’s involvement extends to supporting the NFL Fields Grants application process, honoring of a High School Coach of the Week/Year for both Missouri and Kansas, and inviting 4,000 youth football players and coaches to a special Chiefs game during the upcoming season. Stay tuned as kcchiefs.com gives frequent updates on the Chiefs commitment to the promotion and expansion of youth football. Together with our friends from USA Football, we are encouraging everyone to “Play Football.” So, get your dose of Red and Gold during the team’s down-time before they ship off to training camp in River Falls, WI on July 27th!

playfootballWhat was once not available to the students at Bishop Ward High School, now is. We’re talking about a historic home football field with over $200,000 in improvements. The original grant of $50,000 last year has grown nearly exponentially. The renovations were made possible by the NFL Grassroots Football Fields Program, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and the Kansas City Chiefs.

A ribbon cutting pep rally took place on Thursday, May 17th in celebration of the grant. Directly following the speaking portion of the celebration, Chiefs players then helped “coach” members of the Bishop Ward High School football squad in a seven-on-seven competition.

Those in attendance at the celebration of the 75 year old stadium were team President Carl Peterson, a quartet of Chiefs players, Mayor Joe Reardon and Bishop Ward President Father Michael Hermes. Also in attendance were the Bishop Ward alumni, staff and students.

Dorney Field (a.k.a. Bishop Ward Field) is one of seven metro-area field grants awarded by this program since 1999. Over $1 million has been allocated for field revamping made possible by combined efforts from the Chief’s Children’s Fund and the NFL Grassroots program throughout the past nine years.

Serving inner cities and distressed rural areas in 36 states, LISC is the largest community development organization in the country. Over 100 square miles in redevelopment of Kansas City metro area neighborhoods is supported by the greater Kansas City LISC. For more information, visit www.lisc.org.
