Chiefs Head Coach Herm Edwards
On the game: “It was a game that, when you look at time of possession and yards, it was
really lopsided. That goes to show you what happens in the National Football League when you miss opportunities and
turn the ball over in the wrong area of the football field and give up big plays. You’re looking at a game where we had
the ball for 42 minutes and they only had it for 17 [minutes]. We had somewhere around 500 yards and they had 240
[yards], but at the end of the day, we were in our two-minute mode.
“They made some big plays on some errors and when you do that in this league, people will capitalize on them. We had
some miscues and they were very, very evident. But at the end, this league always goes down to the fourth quarter and I
said it last week and I’ll say it again: it’s about your will and ours was good enough to win and it was a very
important one for us. Our objective this week was to get to 4-3. We’ve got a lot of things to clean up, but if we can
play offense like that and not turn the ball over and give them some easy field position, we have a chance to be a very
good football team in the second half.”
On QB Damon Huard: “I can’t say enough about Damon Huard. He was a little nicked and got
through the game. That’s what we anticipated and he did a great job of going back and making some throws. I think our
players rallied around him and I know he wanted to play this game very, very badly. He’s from that [Seattle] area. You
talk about a backup quarterback coming in under some tough circumstances and he has done a great job. You gotta be
proud of the guy; he’s not played a lot of football in five years. I’ve been in situations like this before and it’s
very tough to win games in this league with your backup quarterback.”
On teaching P Dustin Colquitt to throw the ball: “I thought he was lateraling it but the
officials thought otherwise. I challenged a bunch of them today but it didn’t go my way.”
What are the punter’s instructions when he bobbles the snap? “Well, we have a fire call
where you try to get outside and guys are supposed to run and get open. We have a tight end and a wingback go out, but
[Colquitt] was getting pressure and was trying to get it out of his hand.”
On the official’s explanation of the call: “They said he fumbled. It’s kind of funny when
you challenge things like that. I think the fans want you to get into a dissertation with the [official]. There’s no
dissertation. It’s over. I’m not going to sit there and argue and get on television and act like a nut. For what? When
they make calls and you challenge something, that’s it. You can’t go over there and huddle up again and make them look
at it differently.”
On Jared Allen’s interception return attempt: “How about that? Know your skill level.
That’s what I always tell those guys. We talked about that in training camp. For some reason – he’s a wild horse rider
and thought he was riding his horse at that point. He should have just took the saddle off and given him some water.
Then we have to go out again and play two-minute [defense]. You know what I told him? Now, you’d better stop ‘em, you’d
better stop ‘em now.”
On pulling QB Damon Huard out of the lineup with the way he’s playing: “No, I know who my
staring quarterback is.”
When did you know Damon could play? “In the back of my mind, the guy was going to play. He
wanted to play very badly and he’s from up there [Seattle area] and the team’s counting on him. You have to play a
little hurt every once in a while. That’s what this league is all about.”
On RB Larry Johnson: “He did good; he did real good. But that’s the number of plays. It
was kind of crazy. The other guy [RB Michael Bennett] did, too. We had so many plays. Michael spelled [Johnson] and
made some pretty good runs. I kept asking him if he was okay.”
Referee Pete Morelli
What did you see on the replay on the aborted Chiefs field goal try that resulted in a Seattle
touchdown? The holder looked like he was attempting to throw the ball, but it was just rolling out of his
hand without any control. Therefore, it’s a fumble rather than a forward pass.
The other play in question was the one along the boundary (in the fourth quarter) where a Seattle player
was ruled to have taken the ball away from a Chiefs interceptor: In looking at the replay, [Seattle
receiver Deion Branch] had the ball and two feet down in bounds before he fell out of bounds. He had established
possession on the field.
Seattle Head Coach Mike Holmgren
On the game: “Tough ball game, you know? I think we battled our hearts out and came up short. I felt it
was going to be a close ball game and I told the guys that at halftime. I thought a field goal would decide it and that
was pretty much like that. They got the long touchdown, we got the long touchdown and then we could have used a couple
extra timeouts at the end, we could have used that. Give Kansas City credit, they played hard and played well and we
came up a little short.”
On the Seahawks defense: “I thought we would have played these guys a little bit better
than we did, to be honest with you. We will look at the film and see what we can do to shore up some things.”
On QB Seneca Wallace: “I thought he did a great job. He probably misfired a couple of
times, but all-in-all, I think that this is a difficult stadium to play in, their fans are tremendous and for a young
guy in his first start, I think that he handled most things pretty well.”
On the Seahawks offensive line: “I think that they did okay. The sack that I was the most
troubled with was the last one that came from the other side of the line. I don’t know who the pick-up was on that, but
I think they did okay.”
On challenging DE Jared Allen’s 4th quarter fumbled interception: “That was a challenge
[by us], the play started outside of two minutes. WR Deion Branch grabbed the ball from him before he went out of
bounds.”
On the official ruling of P Dustin Colquitt’s fumble: “I don’t know; I’ve got to hear how
they ruled that. It wasn’t a forward pass by our definition of forward passes, but I don’t know, I’ve got to see it on
film. They looked at it in slow motion and that’s the official’s call. He’s got to decide if it was a pass or if the
ball was actually coming out before the forward movement. I don’t know, it was obviously a big play for us in
th/ktml2/images/editor_images/html.gife game. I’m always surprised when we get one of those, but we got one today.”
On Seattle’s final offensive play: “In that situation, we’ve got to take the shot down the
field to try and get something. It is unlikely that we are going to get the first down throwing the ball to FB Mack
Strong right there. There, [QB Seneca Wallace’s] instincts told him to throw to the open guy and really, in that
instance, even though we might not have a guy open down the field, he’s got to take the shot. Again, I can’t be too
hard on him, I think that he battled. The outcome in this game, in a negative fashion, wasn’t because of Seneca
Wallace. I think given the circumstances he did a fine job.”
