Chiefs-Chargers Postgame Notes
Oct 22, 2006, 5:08:21 PMStarting/Playing Streaks & Notes: G Will Shields extended his franchise records by starting his 213th consecutive game and playing in his 214th consecutive game. TE Tony Gonzalez extended his string of consecutive starts to 117 games.
Chiefs-Chargers Series Notes: The Chiefs are 10-2 (.833) against the Chargers at Arrowhead dating back to ‘95. The Chiefs are now 7-0 all-time against San Diego in October games played in Kansas City.
Defensive Notes: The Chiefs have not allowed any first-quarter points in their first three home games of 2006. Kansas City’s defense has permitted 12.0 ppg in its last five games at Arrowhead. The Chiefs have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 18 consecutive games at Arrowhead, the longest active streak in the NFL. Kansas City has held Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson to an average of 48.3 rushing ypg in his last four starts at Arrowhead.
Offensive Notes: The Chiefs became the first team to score 30 or more against the Chargers defense since San Diego suffered a 34-31 loss at Indianapolis (12/26/04), snapping the Chargers 22-game streak without allowing a 30-point effort. Kansas City registered a season-high 355 yards of total net offense against the Chargers.
Halftime Notes: Kansas City is now 49-7 (.875) in regular season action at Arrowhead when leading at the half dating back to ‘95. The Chiefs have led at halftime in their last 10 meetings with the Chargers at Arrowhead, outscoring San Diego by a 176-to-50 margin in those contests.
Tynes’ Game-Winning Kick: K Lawrence Tynes hit a career-long, 53-yard game-winning FG with 0:06 remaining, marking the second-longest game-winning FG in Chiefs history, trailing only a 54-yard FG made by K Pete Stoyanovich vs. Denver (11/16/97). It was Tynes’ fifth career FG of 50+ yards, tying Stoyanovich for third in Chiefs history. It was Tynes’ third career game-winning FG with the Chiefs.
Drive Time: The Chiefs registered a 14-play, 89-yard TD drive in the third quarter that consumed 7:57, the club’s longest scoring march in terms of plays and time of possession since producing a 14-play drive at the N.Y. Giants (12/17/05) that took 8:10. It was the club’s longest drive in terms of yards since producing a 91-yard TD drive at San Diego (10/30/05).
Turnover Stats: The Chiefs posted a +2 turnover differential against San Diego. Kansas City has now won 16 consecutive games at Arrowhead with a positive turnover mark, the third-longest active streak in the NFL. CB Patrick Surtain recorded his first forced fumble of the season and the fourth of his career. DE Jared Allen registered his second fumble recovery of the season and the fourth of his career. Allen also recorded his second forced fumble of the season and the ninth of his career. DE Tamba Hali recorded the initial fumble recovery of his career. S Greg Wesley registered his second INT of the season and the 28th of his career, moving ahead of LB Willie Lanier (27) for eighth in Chiefs history.
Sack Stats: The Chiefs registered 4.0 sacks, marking the third 4.0-sack game of the season for Kansas City. DE Jared Allen registered 2.0 sacks, marking his sixth career multi-sack game. He now has 24.0 career sacks, tying DE/LB Whitney Paul for 10th on the Chiefs all-time sack chart. DT Ron Edwards recorded his second sack of the season. He now has 9.0 career sacks. DE Tamba Hali recorded 1.0 sack, giving him 3.5 on the season.
Johnson’s Day: RB Larry Johnson now has five rushing TDs on the season and 35 in his
career, moving him into fifth in Chiefs history ahead of RB Ed Podolak (34). Johnson registered the 16th career
100-yard rushing game of his career with a 132-yard performance. The Chiefs are 12-4 (.750) when Johnson has a 100-yard
game, including a 9-0 mark at Arrowhead. San Diego has allowed just four individual 100-yard rushing games since the
start of the 2004 campaign with Johnson producing two of those games, averaging 131.5 rushing ypg in his last two
contests against San Diego. Johnson scored two rushing TDs. Kansas City owns a 9-2 (.819) record when Johnson scores
two or more rushing TDs.
Huard’s Day: QB Damon Huard tied a career high with two TD passes, marking the sixth time in his career that he has accomplished that feat. He finished the game with a 108.9 rating, marking his third 100.0-rating game with the Chiefs and the fourth of his NFL career. Huard now owns an 8-3 (.727) record as an NFL starter.
Gonzalez Extends Receiving Streak: TE Tony Gonzalez extended his franchise-record
receiving streak to 90 games, a mark that ties as the third-longest streak in NFL history by a tight end. Gonzalez
caught a 57-yard reception in the second quarter, his longest reception since hauling in a 67-yard reception at Green
Bay (10/12/03). Gonzalez registered his 16th career 100-yard receiving game with 138 receiving yards, the
fourth-highest receiving yardage total of his career.
100-Yard Rusher/100-Yard Receiver: The Chiefs registered a 100-yard rusher and a 100-yard receiver in the same game for the first time this season - RB Larry Johnson (132 rushing yards) and TE Tony Gonzalez (138 receiving yards). The last time the Chiefs accomplished that feat was vs. Cincinnati (1/1/06).
Kennison TD: WR Eddie Kennison caught a 22-yard TD pass from QB Damon Huard. It was his second TD reception of the season and the 39th of his career. Kennison now has 22 TD catches as a member of the Chiefs, the eighth-highest total in franchise history.
Wilson TD: TE Kris Wilson registered his first career TD on an 11-yard pass from QB Damon Huard.
