VIDEO: Watch every play of the Chiefs-Dolphins Game
Kansas City entered the twilight zone when it played under the Friday night lights for the first time since the ‘64 season. In an unusual scheduling quirk due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Wilma, the Chiefs were forced the Chiefs to fly to the host city on the day of the game instead of observing their normal schedule for a Sunday game. Despite the unique circumstances, Kansas City prevailed by a 30-20 count at Dolphins Stadium.
After a first half that only featured 20 points between the two teams, it only took 1:01 for both teams to score a
touchdown in the second half. First, it was Miami RB Ronnie Brown breaking off a 65-yard run down the left
sideline for a touchdown to cut the Chiefs lead 14-13 only 20 seconds into the third quarter.
Kansas City took a mere 41 seconds to respond with a touchdown of its own. QB Trent Green completed a 24-yard pass to TE Jason Dunn down the middle of the field to get the offense rolling. On the next play RB Priest Holmes went up the middle and it looked like he was stopped, but bounced outside. Thirty-five yards later Holmes was crossing the goal line for his second touchdown of the game.
The goal of any good offense is to win the time of possession and put together long scoring drives. Kansas City was able to do that and take the wind out of the hearty fans who showed up to watch the game. K Lawrence Tynes capped a 14-play drive that consumed 7:53 off the clock with a 30-yard field goal. The Chiefs continued to chew time off the clock with another long scoring drive, this one covering nine plays, as a 51-yard Tynes FG increased the Chiefs lead to 27-13 early in the fourth quarter.
After Kansas City forced Miami to go three-and-out on its next drive, the offense went back to work. Green completed
a 27-yard screen pass to RB Larry Johnson in the left flat, putting the club in position for another long FG attempt.
Tynes booted a career-long 52-yard field goal to up the Chiefs lead to 30-13.
Tynes joined K Nick Lowery as just the only other player in team history to register a pair of 50-yard FGs in the same
game.
But Miami still had one big play in its system. QB Sage Rosenfels entered the game and tried to rally the Dolphins. On his play of the game he completed a 77-yard pass to WR Chris Chambers for a 77-yard touchdown. It cut the lead to 30-20 in favor of the Chiefs, but it would be as close as the Dolphins would get as the Chiefs recovered Miami’s ensuing onside kick and salted away the victory.
Kansas City jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the contest and never looked back. WR Chris Horncaught a career-long 50-yard pass from Green to move the Chiefs down to the Kansas City 18-yard line on the Chiefs opening possession. A difficult catch by TE Tony Gonzalez, who was covered tightly by CB Reggie Howard moved the ball to the five and from there Holmes took over. He took a handoff around the left corner and followed the blocks of T Willie Roaf and WR Eddie Kennison to the end zone.
The Chiefs defense forced the Dolphins into a three-and-out on their first drive as DE Jared Allen knocked down a QB Gus Frerotte pass. On the Miami’s second drive it was DE Eric Hicks knocking down a Frerotte third-down pass. For the fifth time this season, the Chiefs were able to hold their opponents scoreless in the first quarter.
WR Wes Walker jump-started the Miami offense with a 47-yard punt return to set the Dolphins up at the Chiefs 10-yard line early in the second quarter. On its first play Miami was called for a holding call to back it 10 yards as the Chiefs defense stiffened. A
three-yard run by Brown and a three-yard reception by FB Heath Evans moved the ball to the 14-yard line. Dolphins K Olindo Mare booted a 33-yard field goal to trim the Chiefs lead to 7-3.
Kansas City responded right back with an impressive drive of its own featuring RB Larry Johnson. On the 10-play drive that took over five minutes off the clock, the third-year player carried the ball eight times for 34 yards showing signs of both power and speed. Johnson bolted over the left side for a two-yard touchdown run to increase the Chiefs lead to 14-3 with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.
Miami went into its two-minute offense when it got the ball back with 1:56 remaining in the first half. A 34-yard
pass from Frerotte to Welker moved the Dolphins across the field as
completed back-to-back passes to WR Marty Booker and TE Randy McMichael. All of a sudden Miami had first-and-go at the
five-yard line. The Chiefs defense forced three straight incompletions and Miami had to settle for a 23-yard field goal
to cut the Kansas City lead to 14-6 at halftime, leading up to the scoring frenzy to start the third quarter.
The Chiefs two-head rushing attack was at its finest on Friday night. Holmes carried the
ball 18 times for 90 yards (5.0 avg.) with two touchdowns while Johnson added 23 rushes for 93 yards (4.0 avg.) with a score of his own. Gonzalez recorded a season-high seven receptions for 67 yards (9.6 avg.) on the evening and Green completed 20 of 34 passes for 289 yards for an 86.5 rating. Kansas City held the ball for 41:40 compared to just 18:20 for Miami.
The Kansas City defense also proved its mettle on Friday. Hurried all night, Frerotte
completed 11 of 29 passes for 125 yards with an interception for a 37.3 rating. Brown rushed eight times for 95
yards with a TD and McMichael caught three passes for 29
yards.
The Chiefs will enjoy an unexpected weekend off before traveling to San Diego to play AFC West rival Chargers on Sunday October 30th. Kickoff for the game is slated to 3:05 pm (CT).
