ERIC WARFIELD SHARES CHEER IN ARKANSAS

Jul 21, 2005, 2:47:24 AM

CB Eric Warfield of the Kansas City Chiefs once again was in his native Arkansas to help the youth of his hometown of Texarkana. Warfield along with NFL alumni QB Mike Cherry and RWR Byron Williams took part in Hometown NFL Weekend which supported the Faith, Love & Hope Youth Corporation (FLHYC).

The Hometown NFL Weekend kicked off on June 24th with a celebrity golf tournament followed by a banquet and “Night with the Stars.” The next day saw festivities such as the Byron Williams Football Camp, the NFL Cheerleader Chap and a celebrity basketball game pitting NFL players past and present against local law enforcement officers. The weekend concluded with a closing service at Lonoke Baptist Church. Needless to say, Warfield made it a priority to remain just as hands on as he had the previous three years of the Hometown NFL Weekend.

“This is a very important event for me,” Warfield noted. “We all have adversities in our life but these kids are truly an inspiration. Growing up, there were always foster children in our household and it is important for me to show them that they are no different from you or I.”

The FLHYC, which was created five years ago to provide programming and shelter to at-risk youth, is a charity close to Warfield’s heart for many reasons. Most notably, Warfield’s mother, Rosie Warfield-McGill, is the founder of the organization. Through FLHYC, Rosie helps to house some of the 76 foster children that reside in Arkansas’ Miller County. Without the generosity that this long-time foster parent has shown, the majority of these children would be forced to live outside the local area due to a shortage of foster homes.

The FLHYC recently bought an old school building with the hopes of turning it into a residential facility/community center. The idea is to keep kids at home and out of trouble by working together as a community for the betterment of Texarkana’s youth. The new center resides in a low socio-economic area and already provides activities such as karate, drama, art and job training (for youth and adults).
