Jun 13, 2005, 3:10:28 PM

This evening, Kansas City Chiefs G Will Shields will be front-and-center receiving yet another honor for his incredible giving nature. This time, Shields will be recognized with a 2005 Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award. Shields, a native Oklahoman, will receive the award in Tulsa during the 12th Annual Iba Awards Banquet.

Shields is no stranger to accolades, be it professional or philanthropic in nature. The 2003 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, Shields is a 10-time Pro Bowler who has started all butshieldsread his initial game in the NFL (a string of 191 consecutive contests). Additionally, he has been recognized as the NFL’s Top Good Guy (The Sporting News - 2001) and The Humanitarian of the Year (Arthur S. Arkush Award by Pro Football Weekly – 1999) among others. Since the inception of his Will to Succeed Foundation in 1993, Will and his wife, Senia, have assisted some 97,781individuals.

“I have had the distinct pleasure to witness first-hand the involvement that Will and his wife, Senia, have in the Kansas City community,” Chiefs President Carl Peterson recently noted. “Simply put, they have done everything the right way.”

The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards are given in recognition of America’s premiere athletes who have excelled in their sport and have shown by their actions a desire to help others. Their outstanding personal involvement and success in their chosen work have made them heroes in the eyes of the world and Henry P. Iba would have undoubtedly been proud to be associated with the selections made in his name.

A legendary collegiate basketball coach, Henry Iba was an unparalleled success as a professional, a leader and a citizen. The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards were created to recognize and honor one female and one male athlete who best exemplify the high degree of citizenship in the image of Henry P. Iba.

Golf icon Amy Alcott will be honored as the female recipient at the banquet along with Shields. Alcott, who was recognized in 2000 as one of the LPGA’s top 50 players and teachers, also has a lengthy tradition of serving others.
