STATEMENT OF CHIEFS FOUNDER LAMAR HUNT
May 13, 2005, 6:20:38 PM
Regarding the failure to receive a positive vote on the Athletes and Entertainers tax in the Missouri House of
Representatives on this date
“The Chiefs are disappointed in the defeat by the Missouri House of Representatives of Senate Bill 269, commonly
known as the Athletes and Entertainers Tax. It was, we felt, an important first step in efforts to maintain and improve
the stadiums in the Truman Sports Complex. For their efforts in introducing the bill and helping pass it in the
Missouri Senate, we heartily thank its sponsors Senator Charlie Shields and Senator Victor Callahan.
“The taxing of professional athletes who use the stadiums now exists in the State of Missouri and we felt it was a
reasonable source of funding for the maintenance and repairs of the stadiums. With these funds now unavailable to the
Sports Complex it raises the possibility of default on the part of Jackson County on the Chiefs lease at Arrowhead in
the foreseeable future.
“This decision by the Missouri House necessitates that the Chiefs continue to explore all other options to assure a
major modernization of Arrowhead Stadium. One such option is additional funding at the earliest possible date from
Jackson County, the owners of the Truman Sports Complex. If the Jackson County Sports Authority is unable to fulfill
their obligations to maintain Arrowhead as a “state-of-the-art” facility as called for in the existing Chiefs lease, it
will be in default.
“The Chiefs organization as in the past, is continuing to pursue other major events at Arrowhead for the Kansas City
community, and the long-range maintenance and modernization of Arrowhead is a vital part to the success of these
efforts.
“We will be reviewing every reasonable alternative with Jackson County and the Jackson County Sports Authority and
all other interested parties to assure the long-range solution to the Stadium issue as it impacts the viability of the
Chiefs franchise.”
