Kendrea - Chiefs Cheerleader Pro
Bowl Representative
What is the process of being selected as a Pro Bowl cheerleader?
Our team has a selection process in which the entire cheerleading squad, cheerleader staff and directors vote on five girls that will best represent the team based on a variety of attributes such as work ethic, dance ability, fitness, appearance, speaking ability, commitment to squad rules and standards, leadership qualities, respect for others, humilty, etc. The girl receiving the most votes overall will be chosen to represent the Chiefs and the AFC at the Pro Bowl.
How does it feel to represent the Chiefs at the Pro Bowl?
I feel incredibly blessed and humbled to be representing the Chiefs organization, Mr. Hunt, current and former Chiefs Cheerleaders and Kansas City in this capacity. I am also looking forward to building friendships with the other Pro Bowl cheerleaders as well as showing the fans and other organizations the Chiefs Cheerleaders high caliber of professionalism, hard work, respect for others and humility.
What does being a Pro Bowl cheerleader entail?
I will work with one representative from each NFL cheerleading team. We will prepare all the routines and dances as one big group for performance at the Pro Bowl game and certain appearances, learn and perform a pre-game show that features each Pro Bowl cheerleader, and participate in several charity and PR appearances throughout the week. For example, Pro Bowl cheerleaders will get the opportunity to visit sick patients at local hospitals, visit military, teach a youth cheerleading clinic at Pearl Harbor and perform various other duties to promote the NFL and 2005 Pro Bowl game the entire week leading up to and during the Pro Bowl game. We will cheer the Pro Bowl game in our team uniform so that our fans can recognize us.
When do you leave and how much does it take to prepare?
I will leave Monday morning February 7th and return on the 16th. I have had to prepare by learning 8 routines and 4 short dances on a videotape; I received the tape a few days after the Christmas game, so I have had approximately 6 weeks to learn the routines. Each routine is about 1 minute 15 seconds long. I have also had to do a photoshoot in order to make a trading card to give to fans, organize and sew practice attire that I will wear, and gather basic necessities for the 10 day trip. I will also learn a pre-game routine and put all the routines into formation to be performed with the other Pro Bowl cheerleaders when I arrive in Hawaii.
Has this always been your dream and what was your feeling when you first found out?
Yes, this has been a dream of mine ever since I first made the squad in 1999. It is such an incredible honor to be chosen by my teammates to represent them at the Pro Bowl. Only one girl on each team can represent their team as the Pro Bowl representative; and unlike the players, she can only go to the Pro Bowl one time in her cheerleading career. The outpouring of support has been immeasurable; I am still in shock but extremely excited, grateful and humbled.
How did they let you know?
It was announced at the Christmas game right after our Halftime performance in front of the fans. When the announcement was made on the field, I was completely in shock! As the only 6th year veteran, It didn’t even register to me ( the announcement was made that the girl chosen had been on the squad for 6 years). It wasn’t until I was rushed by my teammates, that I realized that they were talking about me!
Anything else you would like to add?
This has been an amazing journey! I feel so lucky to have a “job” that I enjoy going to everyday and gives me so many opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Being a part of this organization has completely changed my heart and outlook on life, and ultimately helped shape me into the woman that I have become today. The game day experience alone is hands down the best in the league- we have the BEST fans and tailgates, funniest mascot and some of the most entertaining plays by an incredibly talented high caliber team. It is all of these reasons and more that have kept me coming back year after year, and the reason I will always love the home of the Chiefs!
