Members of the Kansas City Chiefs Rookie Club made their second “club” appearance this season count has they stopped
by Operation Breakthrough in Kansas City, Missouri. Chiefs rookies participating included: Scott Connot, Keyaron Fox,
Aaron Golliday, Jonathan
Ingram, Jeris McIntyre, Matt Miller, Samie Parker, Kevin
Sampson, Benny Sapp, Rich Scanlon, Junior Siavii, Richard Smith and Kris Wilson. However, the Rookies weren’t alone as
they met up with Carol Vermeil and other members of the Chiefs Wives Group. Joining together under the mantra of
“volunteerism,” they all gathered to partake in the annual NFL-United Way Hometown Huddle.
While there, the Chiefs contingent spent time playing and speaking with the children, while also distributing Shadow
Buddies complements of the Tony Gonzalez Foundation. Each “buddie” was fitted with a special “Hometown Huddle”
shirt.
In the fourth year of existence, the Chiefs Rookie Club has become a model program that started in Kansas City and
is now commonplace throughout the NFL. The goal of the group is to introduce the players to community organizations in
their new hometown.
The NFL and United Way Hometown Huddle is a collection of hands-on volunteer projects implemented simultaneously the
same week in different NFL cities across the country. For the last six years, NFL players and their families have
participated in a variety of activities ranging from building playgrounds for toddlers to conducting skill-building
sessions for teens to serving lunch to senior citizens. Hometown Huddle represents a snapshot of some of the volunteer
activities in which NFL players participate year round with local United Way agencies.
