Chiefs Sign Veteran CFL Punter/Placekicker
Apr 15, 1999, 8:56:00 AMFleming, 28, has been one of the CFL's top punters and placekickers the past seven years. The 6-3, 190-pounder from Vancouver, British Columbia, was the Edmonton Eskimos placekicker all seven seasons, making 262 of 358 career field attempts, good for a 73.2%, and served as the club's punter in '97-98, averaging 41.0 yards on 265 career boots. The highlight of his career came in '93 when he tied a Grey Cup record with six field goals, earning Outstanding Canadian Player of the Game honors in Edmonton's 33-23 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He set an Eskimos record in '97 with a 91-yard punt against Saskatchewan. He was in the Washington Redskins training camp as a punter in '96 but was released before the start of the regular season.
Fleming left the University of Wyoming as the WAC's all-time leading scorer with 324 career points. He connected on 47 of 93 field goal attempts and 153 of 158 PATs. He was a second team all-conference choice as a kicker in '90 and as a punter in '89.
