THE MATCH-UP
The Chiefs make the long jaunt to South Florida on Saturday when they visit the Dolphins in the third preseason
contest for both clubs. Kansas City is 1-1 on the preseason and is coming off a 27-17 loss vs. Arizona (8/16). Miami is
also 1-1 in preseason competition. The Dolphins are coming off a 19-14 decision at Jacksonville (8/16).
Herm Edwards enters his third season as Kansas City’s head coach and boasts one of the NFL’s youngest squads. Tony
Sparano will guide a youthful Dolphins squad in his initial campaign as an NFL head coach.
Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham leads a Kansas City defense that ranked in the NFL’s top fi ve in nine
different different defensive categories in 2007. The Chiefs led the league in third-down defense (31.3%) and forced a
league-high 121 negative plays. KC also ranked second in the NFL in Red Zone defense (14.5 TD pct.). Chan Gailey is
implementing a revamped offensive scheme for Kansas City in 2008 after holding that same role with the Dolphins form
2000-01.
Kansas City and Miami both feature explosive runners who are attempting to rebound from 2007 injuries. Two-time Pro
Bowl RB Larry Johnson returns for the Chiefs in 2008 after missing the fi nal eight games of the 2007 campaign with a
foot injury. Meanwhile, Miami RB Ronnie Brown is looking to regain his 1,000-yard form after missing the fi nal nine
contests of 2007 with a knee injury.
The Chiefs passing game is headlined by nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez, whose 820 receptions are the highest
total by a tight end in NFL history. Second-year WR Dwayne Bowe returns home to South Florida after leading all NFL
rookies with 70 catches and 995 yards in 2007. QB Brodie Croyle (D3-06) started six games last season and triggers the
KC offense, while the quarterback competition for the Dolphins is wide open.
The Chiefs round out the preseason with a Governor’s Cup match-up vs. St. Louis (8/28), while Miami closes out the
preseason at New Orleans (8/28). KC opens the 2008 regular season at New England (9/7).

THE SERIES
Kansas City leads the all-time regular season series 12-11-0 against the Dolphins, including a 6-3 mark at Arrowhead.
Miami leads the all-time preseason series at 2-1-1. The Dolphins pulled out an 11-10 victory in last year’s preseason
meeting at Arrowhead (8/16/07). The Chiefs fi rst preseason game at Miami (8/12/66) marked the Dolphins fi rst game at
the Orange Bowl in their inaugural season as an AFL expansion franchise.

The Chiefs dropped a 13-10 contest at Miami (11/12/06) in their most recent regular season contest against the
Dolphins. Kansas City’s last win at Miami came under unique circumstances as the Chiefs traveled to South Florida on
the day of the game. The Chiefs won by a 30-20 count at Dolphin Stadium (10/21/05) in a contest that was moved to a
Friday due to Hurricane Wilma. Kansas City won its most recent regular season home meeting with Miami by a 48-30 score
at Arrowhead (9/29/02).
Without question, the most memorable and most signifi cant contest in this series was Miami’s 27-24 double-overtime
AFC Divisional Playoff win at Kansas City (12/25/71), Miami’s fi rst-ever victory over the Chiefs after six straight
losses dating back to ‘66. That Christmas Day classic remains the longest game in NFL history (82:40). It was not only
the fi nal game ever played at Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium, but also marked the Chiefs fi nal postseason appearance
of the magnifi cent Hank Stram era.
