The Chiefs efforts to promote and expand youth football are at the forefront of the organization’s focus. As a result of their unparalleled commitment to the development of youth football in the Kansas City area, the Chiefs received the Pop Warner-NFL Team of the Year Award in 2005.
“The Kansas City Chiefs Football Club sincerely believes that youth athletics are essential to the healthy growth and development of children,” Chiefs President Carl Peterson explains. “Youth sports provide our future athletes and leaders that enrich both this city and country. In the coming years, we will to continue to work hard to promote and expand youth sports in America.”

On June 3, 2001, the Derrick Thomas Academy, a tuition-free public charter school, was launched in downtown Kansas City at 201 East Armour Plaza. The academy is the first-ever public elementary charter school named in honor of an NFL hero. More »

First Downs for Down Syndrome
First Downs for Down Syndrome raises money for the Down Syndrome Guild of Kansas City and the Down Syndrome Center of Children’s Mercy Hospital. The program is based on the success of the Chiefs offensive linemen to gain first downs. As a result, over $600,000 has been raised since 1992 for the program. G Brian Waters and C Casey Weigmann currently serve as the honorary co-chairpersons of the program.
Hometown Huddle
As has become an annual tradition, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to take part in the NFL and United Way Hometown Huddle. On the same day, every team in the NFL spent time volunteering in their respective communities.
Jazzercise
You can be in the spotlight at a Kansas City Chiefs game in Arrowhead Stadium by participating in the annual Jazzercise Chiefs Boogie this coming season. Jazzercisers will be performing a routine at halftime in front of more than 75,000 people. The event will once again benefit youth through the Kansas City Chiefs Children’s Fund. Operation Blessing
Annually, the Kansas City Chiefs, in conjunction with the Kansas City Royals, host Operation Blessing Food Distribution. Over 200 volunteers come out to help bag food and hand the bags out to approximately 3,000 needy families. Under the banner of “Two Teams — One Goal!” Chiefs players and coaches join with the Royals to help deserving families. Operation Blessing was founded in 1978 as a humanitarian, non-profit relief organization which donates produce, canned goods, building supplies and disaster relief to natural disaster victims and needy families around the world.
Out For Blood
The Annual Chiefs “Out for Blood” Drive is spearheaded by the organization. The drive that has just successfully completed its 10th season takes place during the Chiefs season. The event includes a special tailgate extravaganza at all Community Blood Center Locations.
PETERSON/EDWARDS GOLF CLASSIC
Called “one of premier charity events in town” by K.C. Golf Tournament and Travel magazine, the Carl Peterson/Herm Edwards Golf Classic raises funds to benefit local charities via the Chiefs Children’s Fund.
Read Across America
Read Across America is a national program that encourages all adults to promote reading among children. The program is sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA) and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF). Held each year in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, the Chiefs always have several players visit local schools to promote reading.
Red Friday
The Red Friday celebration is an annual Chiefs event, sponsored by the Red Coaters, to kick off the start of the regular season. It is a day of fund raising and fun beginning with paper sales in the early morning, a luncheon in the afternoon and then a pep rally in the early evening. During the day-long celebration, the Chiefs raise money for players’ charities.
Rookie Club
The Chiefs Rookie Club has become a model program that continues to spread throughout the NFL. The goal is to introduce the players to community organizations that are active in their new homes. The rookies have done such things as adopting a grade level at a local elementary school, visiting the local Children’s Campus Center, visiting the children of Operation Breakthrough, serving as bell ringers for the Salvation Army, and visiting the seniors of Don Bosco Senior Center.
The Chiefs Children’s Fund was established in 1983 and provides vital support to more than 60 local youth agencies annually. The Chiefs Children’s Benefit Game, which will celebrate over 20 years of existence, is one of the largest of its kind in the NFL. More »
Heart of a Champion
The Heart of a Champion Foundation has developed a national in-school program to foster character development among students. The Heart of a Champion Character Development Program combines video and audio materials, along with an innovative print curriculum, to reach a “sight and sound” generation. This is a comprehensive, nine-month, in-class program that teaches and reinforces positive character traits and virtues, and demonstrates examples of persons with high character to students in a learning environment on a year-round basis. Stressing the nine attributes of commitment, leadership, perseverance, teamwork, respect, integrity, responsibility, self control, and compassion, this program is being funded jointly by the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Kansas Public Schools. Toys for Tots
The Kansas City Chiefs have worked with the “Toys for Tots” campaign for over four decades, longer than any other NFL team. Each holiday season, Chiefs and Marine Corps volunteers collect unwrapped toys for children at the Arrowhead Stadium turnstiles. Fans are also allowed to make monetary contributions.
