Michael Ketchum enters his third season as an NFL assistant coach and the second as a defensive assistant for the Chiefs. He served as the club’s offensive assistant/quality control coach in 2006.

Ketchum works closely with defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham in finalizing the weekly game plan and compiling the daily practice scripts. He provides a statistical breakdown of team’s upcoming opponents and players. In addition, he analyzes and communicates opponents’ personnel and tendencies to the rest of the defensive staff from the press box on game days.

In his first season with the Chiefs, Ketchum coordinated the club’s offensive self-scouting duties and was responsible for computer analysis, statistical and video breakdowns on a weekly basis. He also monitored the club’s offensive tendencies.

Prior to joining the Chiefs, Ketchum served three seasons (2003-05) as a defensive graduate assistant working under head coach Kirk Ferentz at the University of Iowa. During his tenure in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes posted a 27-10 overall record, including a pair of bowl victories. Iowa limited opponents to 126.0 rushing yards per game, a mark that ranked third in the Big Ten.

In 2004 the Hawkeyes defense spearheaded the charge towards a Big Ten co-Championship while permitting five of their eight league foes to score two touchdowns or less. The Iowa defense ranked fifth in the nation in rushing defense (92.5 ypg) and 11th in total defense (293.8 ypg) that season. In his first season with Iowa, Ketchum assisted with a defensive unit that ranked seventh in the nation in scoring defense (16.2 ppg), eighth in rushing defense (92.7 ypg) and 16th in total defense (314.5 ypg). That season Iowa limited eight of its 13 opponents to 75 rushing yards or less.

Ketchum joined the Iowa football program after serving two seasons (2001-02) as the video coordinator at Vanderbilt. He edited all practice and game video, in addition to supervising a staff of students who taped all practices and games for every Vanderbilt athletic team. In 2001, Ketchum assisted the offensive coaching staff in the breakdown of opponents’ game video.

The Ft. Benning, Georgia native entered the coaching profession as a graduate assistant for the offense at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. Ketchum helped tutor the offensive tackles and tight ends during the 2000 season, as well as serving as the team’s video coordinator. During his stint with the Bulldogs he assisted in a variety of roles, including equipment and field management, recruiting and the strength and conditioning program.

Ketchum was a four-year letterman as a lineman at the University of the South where he was also a member of the rugby program. He was a prep football standout at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia where he also earned two varsity letters in wrestling.
