The Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp Presented by First National Bank to Return in 2008

The Kansas City Chiefs and First National Bank today announced that they are continuing a partnership that will lead to an exciting opportunity for 1,000 area youth football players.

firstnationalThe Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp, presented by First National Bank, will be held in Kansas City for the second time on May 17th and May 18th at the Chiefs Practice Facility. Over 150 volunteer coaches will assist the Chiefs coaching staff and players in providing instruction for football and more importantly, the skills necessary to become winners in the game of life. During the course of the camp, Edwards will share seven core concepts with the campers and will expound on their importance both in life and on the football field – Expectations, Priorities, Commitment, Choices, Integrity, Teamwork and Sportsmanship.

“My family is very excited that the Chiefs and First National Bank have teamed up once again to bring our football camp to Kansas City,” Edwards commented. “These youngsters will leave our camp with a solid understanding of some basic football fundamentals, but more importantly, we hope to send them back to their communities and schools as better citizens and students.”

“First National Bank is excited to sponsor this event for the second year,” noted First National Bank President Mike Earleywine. “Last year our bank saw 1,000 children walk away from this event with an experience they will never forget. Coach Edwards is such an inspiration to these young children. We applaud him for making a difference in the lives of so many Kansas City youth.”

Edwards’ name has become synonymous with this type of endeavor. While this represents the second year for the Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp in Kansas City, it is far from the first youth camp this seven-year NFL head coaching veteran has organized. Having grown up on the Monterey Peninsula and graduated from Monterey High School, he hosts a similar clinic in his native California each summer. Entering its 13th season in 2008, Edwards’ California camp is a rousing success and has grown in size each year. That version quickly served as Edwards’ inspiration to bring a similar camp to Kansas City.

The Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp presented by First National Bank is the latest in the organization’s commitment to support youth football initiatives. Other youth football programs that the Chiefs are involved with include honoring a High School Coach of the Week and Year for both Kansas and Missouri, inviting over 3,000 youth football players and coaches to the annual Chiefs Youth Football Game, has donated over $1 million in Grassroots field grants to local agencies and schools, partnering with the National Football Foundation’s “Play it Smart” program as well as the NFL’s Junior Player Development skills camp and will be a pilot program for the new Atlas & Athena substance abuse curriculum.

First National Bank was established in Kansas in 1993 as part of one of the oldest and most successful financial organizations in the Midwest, First National of Nebraska. Since its founding, First National Bank has established an outstanding reputation in the community and has grown to $1.1 billion in assets.

kc08Herm Edwards Needs Your Help

The 2008 Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp presented by First National Bank will be held on Saturday, May 17 thru Sunday, May 18. This free camp will instruct 1,000 youth on some fundamentals of both football and life.

Still, an endeavor of this magnitude can’t happen without the help of others. That’s why Herm Edwards is asking for your assistance. If you think you’ve got what it takes to join his team and serve as a volunteer coach at this camp, please click the link below.

As an added incentive, Coach Edwards and his Chiefs staff will be holding a complementary Coaching Clinic on Friday, May 16 for any individuals volunteering to coach at his camp.

Chiefs Partner with Greater Kansas City Community Foundation for Charity Game Selection Process

ccf The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that there is a new selection process for 501(c) (3) agencies interested in becoming a recipient of the annual Chiefs Charity Game.

The Chiefs and the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation will jointly administer the application process for qualified agencies who must submit a preliminary letter of interest to the Greater Kansas City Community.

Organizations applying must hold 501(c) (3) status and primarily serve Jackson County youth. For more requirements as well as information on the application and selection process please consult http://www.gkccf.org/nonprofits.aspx?id=1228&menu_id=38

“Since my father brought the Chiefs to Kansas City 45 years ago, our family has considered it a responsibility and an honor to serve the communities of our fans, particularly our fans in Jackson County,” Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt said.

“Since its inception in 1984, the Chiefs Children’s Charity Game has raised nearly $6 million for worthy causes throughout the Kansas City community. By partnering with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, we plan to build upon the Chiefs legacy of service and provide opportunities and funding to a wider range of non-profit organizations over time that work diligently to strengthen our community.”

“We’re excited that the Chiefs are rallying the community together in the spirit of making Kansas City a better place,” said Laura McKnight, president and CEO of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. “Their commitment to supporting local nonprofit organizations through a competitive selection process demonstrates their passion for making an impact with their charitable giving and improving our region’s quality of life.”

Over the years, the Chiefs and the Chiefs Children’s Fund have worked with generous individuals and businesses in Kansas City to make life better for children in our community. Over the past three years combined, the game has amassed nearly $2 million for disadvantaged Kansas City children, including a record $750,000 in 2005. Celebrating its 24th season this year, the game is recognized throughout the NFL as the top charity game.

The mission of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life in Greater Kansas City by increasing charitable giving, connecting donors to community needs they care about, and providing leadership on critical community issues. The Community Foundation, including its six affiliates within the Greater Kansas City region, is recognized as a national leader in making sure every philanthropic investment returns the greatest emotional, civic and financial benefit possible.

DRIVE AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER

Five local organizations concerned about men’s health have teamed up to bring a one-of-a-kind venue to screen men for prostate cancer and educate them and their families about risk, early detection and clinical trials. The Drive Against Prostate Cancer features a 39-foot recreational vehicle, provided by the National Prostate Cancer Coalition, specifically designed for prostate cancer screening and equipped with a large flat screen TV, satellite programming, access to the Internet, healthy snacks and an informal “locker room” atmosphere.

Hundreds of men can be screened for free each day from December 15-18. The screening consists of a simple blood test and a physical examination. Local physicians will provide these free and confidential screenings in as little as 10 minutes without an appointment. Each man will receive a notification letter than explains the test results, and provides a list of local resources for follow-up care and additional information.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Cancer Center, Gail’s Harley Davidson, Cerner Corporation, American Cancer Society, and DST Systems, Inc. have joined forces to bring the Drive to Kansas City. While the screenings will be offered at several locations over the four days, perhaps the most visible location will be on December 16 as thousands of fans will see the vehicle as they enter Arrowhead Stadium.

“We, at the Chiefs, are pleased to join with our marketing partners in supporting this effort to increase prostate cancer awareness. This disease has personally touched our organization as we lost our founder Lamar Hunt to it this past year. The Kansas City Chiefs are committed to helping encourage our male fans everywhere to get screened each year. Early detection is the key to controlling and eliminating this disease,” said Carl Peterson, President/GM/CEO of Kansas City Chiefs Football Club.

One in every six men will get prostate cancer sometime in his life with more than 218,000 new cases expected this year. An estimated 27,000 men will die this year from prostate cancer. “We are pleased to be partnering with other leading organizations in the area, especially the Kansas City Chiefs, to increase the awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of screening that can not only save lives but save quality of life,” said Mark Myron, MD, President of Kansas City Cancer Center.

Visit the National Prostate Cancer Coalition online at www.fightprostatecancer.org for full details of each screening event in Kansas City (including dates, times, locations), or for more information on prostate cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Chiefs Join “TeamSmile” in Recognition of Kansas City Oral Health Care Day

smilecrmainOn Saturday, September 22nd — opening weekend at Arrowhead Stadium — TeamSmile will hold its second annual dental outreach program, ‘Kansas City Oral Health Care Day’.

TeamSmile is a non-profit organization that teams up with the Kansas City Chiefs and Colgate to provide quality dental care to the underserved children of Kansas City. With the help of local dental professionals, Sullivan-Schein Dental, DEXIS Digital X-Ray, MetLife, Humana, Guardian, Assurant, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas City, Septodont and select dental manufacturers, TeamSmile will provide oral health education and free dental screenings and treatment. The UMKC dental school will again be apart of the program, and will provide dental screenings in the Colgate’s “Brighter Smiles, Brighter Futures’ RV.

TeamSmile is a state-of-the-art program; it is the first dental outreach program on record to have integrated a complete computer network. This network, powered by Dentrix Dental Systems and DEXIS Digital Sensors, will allow the dental volunteers to electronically store the children’s x-rays and procedure records. This means more efficient and more effective high-quality care.

Last year, the outreach program treated one hundred thirty children. This year TeamSmile hopes to treat between three and four hundred children. Organizations that are being served are ‘Operation Breakthrough’, ‘Academics First, Athletics Second’ and ‘The Clay Johnson Foundation’. And, for the first time this year, ‘Kansas City Oral Health Care Day’ will be open to the public from 3-5 PM. Children ages two through sixteen can get a free dental screening and fluoride treatment.

There will be free giveaways, games, face painting and entertainment, as well as appearances by MetLife Snoopy, the Kansas City Chiefs mascot KC Wolf, the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders, Dustin Colquitt Chiefs punter, and Colgate’s Dr. Rabbit and Dr. Brushwell. The TeamSmile football exhibition team will also be there to throw the football around and give tips to the kids for their upcoming football seasons! And free athletic mouth guards will be passed out while supplies last.
